I've just seen RtRC and they were fishing for whelks using baited pots. They used old spider crab bits.

The question I have is that if the crab bits are off and the whelks eat them and then we eat them is there any chance of getting food poisoning? I assume not as the whelks eat dead matter, but I was just wondering.

By the time the stuff has been eaten by the whelk, and the whelk has been boiled for 20 minutes, I reckon you're pretty safe. Most food poisoning is caused by contamination of the food after it's dead, except in the case of filter feeders, which whelks aren't.

And I just thought, I think you remove the digestive bits before you eat them.

I did think that, as Mr FW did seem to remove bits. I wish they told us a few more useful bits and left our some of the chummyness in the show.

What are fresh whelks like, not the ones you get served in a pub on a Friday evening.

Dont get too excited about fresh whelks taste, the word rubber and something too nasty to print come to mind.

At a local farmers market the fresh whelks sell out very quickly. There must be a good way to cook them so that they are good to eat?

I always had mine raw as a kid, served in vinegar or salt water.
