Eels are a delicacy, not often found other than in expensive restaurants. Delicious smoked, so you can put your fish-smoking skills into practice.

But how to catch them ? Why not use the same methods as our ancestors did....

Fish (the other one) provides you with illustrated instructions for making
your very own eel trap

whose form follows its function, but is a thing of beauty in its own right. Get weaving !

BTW, once you've caught an eel using this trap (or any method) : what's the best and most humane way kill it ?

And what then ? Do you gut a fish that long, or what ?

And can't you use eelskin for handbags, shoes and trousers, if you're Rawk Star?

Whacking them on the tail rather than the head stuns them IIRC.

skin from a circular skin cut around the "neck" and a lengthways skin slit along the body ,unroll to tail
they are ace smoked or stewed

I posted this thread on another forum, I hope people find it of use.

First stage of eel catching put into action tonight.

Dig worms and chop them up. Stick them in one of kaz's pop socks while she isn't wearing them and put them in the eel trap for bait.

A nice walk down the fields with doodle and camera. The stream is at the bottom of this field.
My little legs hardly touched the ground.

Getting the trap ready to go into the stream

In it goes !

Its only a small stream but heres the trap snuggled on the bed with its entrance facing down stream. Hopefully the eels will get a whif of the chopped worms and be waiting for me in the morning.

Thats the theory only tomorrow will tell what happens in practice.

There was still a bit of early morning mist on the hills as I made my way to the stream.
My catch for the day was this ! Not an eel but a four or five inch brown trout. The trout in the local streamst on the mountain top as I went down to the stream.

are very dark and anything over 1/2 lb is virtually black.

He was immediately returned after his photo call.My next venture will be to a local pond.
