|
Can anybody give me some advice on extracting the lanolin from sheep fleece which is already spun and skeined please? I don't want to boil it to death as with unspun raw fleece as I want to use both the spun wool and hopefully the lanolin too. Any ideas? |

You'll need an awful lot of spun yarn to get a visible quantity of lanolin, but generally its described as just packing it all into a pan of water and bringing it slowly to the boil then hold it there for a couple of hours. Remove the wool, and reduce the water until you just have teh lanolin left. youcan't just skim it off as parts of it are water soluble, so you get a sort of milky effect where the soluble part is in the water. Whether its worthwhile with spun yarn I'm not sure, doeneds a bit on how much you have and whether its a robust enough yarn to take the long slow boil |

Is it possible to buy raw lanolin in its natural state -just a thought as I was reading this? |

Thanks girls. I'm sure you can buy lanolin but I was just trying to avoid waste. I usually just wash my spun wool in hot water and waste the lanolin which seems a shame. If I boil it I'm concerned about the spun wool being useless afterwards and it takes me such a long time to spin it. I'll try one skein and see what happens. |

what are you hoping to use the lanolin for? Could you make use of it in its impure, dissolved state, in which case you could save the first washing water for more or less immediate use? |

Hi Sally, I was hoping to make some hand cream with it. |
