is there a list anywhere of who they are and what they eg Forestry Commission, English Nature...someone similar for the sea, waterways, heath, moor, mountain, I dunno, that sort of thing?

Yep, that's pretty much what I was after - not charities, just the depts and agencies, smashing Behemoth thanks!

On my meanderings I also came across this site which is well worth a play with:
