I've got tons of work to get through this weekend and I want to be able to pull inormation off my work pc/server.

Only problem is I have no idea how to do it. Can anyone give me a starting point.

The home pc runs xp pro and has a broadband connection through a netgear firwall router.

Work runs small business server 2003 and again a broadband connection via a draytek firewall router.

Not sure if that is enough info, but if anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks
Phillip

You can use "vnc"

https://www.tightvnc.com/

There are various versions, but that link is one I remember.

You will however have to be able to set up "port forwarding" on your works router, as well as your home router.

Do you have the rights to do this at work? may as well ask this first otherwise there is no way I can see of doing this.

Second what Jema just said, VNC should do the job, but you'd better try and test it before you get home and find it doesn't work.

Thanks Jemma/Tahir I'll have a look at it and try and test it at lunch time (I only live 5 mins from work).

I work for a small company and I've got all the access rights to the server, even though I don't understand most of it .

We have a basic support contract with the company that installed our accounts software but they are so slow at responding.

Looking at the link is this something along the lines of pcanywhere?

Thanks again
Phillip

Yes it's like PC anywhere but so much less resource hungry, and it's free.

I don't imagine we will be able to guess how to get to the configuration of your router!

This is setting up a VPN isn't it? Won't his work router/firewall need an external IP address mapped to the server?

Nothing to do with VPN which is a virtual private network. You could do it that way I know, though I have never done it. But some ISPs such as NTL do not even allow VPN as they classify it as business use.

What we need here is simple port forwarding on bother routers for the ports used by VNC.

I think our software people use a VPN to access our system for updates. i'm sure I've heard it mentioned before by them.

If they use a VPN then you should be able to use the same VPN, is it worth asking them how?

But only if allowed by his ISP! I know NTL prohibit this.

Just sent them an e-mail to ask about the VPN. I won't hold my breath for a reply. It is Friday after all, they are probably on the way to the pub.
