Just beginning to look these up - does anyone have any good info or bookmarks that don't relate to cannabis?

Funny enough the fuzz don't leave the grow lights or the irrigation systems after a bust. Discovered this a couple of weeks ago when helping a friend remove 100s of pots of compost from the house that she'd let out to someone.

get the best ballast units you can afford

you need 2 types of bulb ,if you want growth and flowering

they put out a lot of heat.plants put out a lot of water so most places you will need extracted ventilation

water, electric heat etc have risks so make sure all things are done properly

600 to 1000w will cover a small to medium room

wear sunglasses

beware busts and "taxmen" even if you are growing cacti or whatever

they do give awesome control of day length and weather

hope that helps

I am sure the information is transferable.

See, that sounds far more high-tech than I was thinking. I was hoping for a few extra lights to keep some tomatoes and chard happy
The room has some south facing windows, and some north facing windows and skylights, it's light and airy overall, just lacking in direct sunlight*

*It's also north Yorkshire soooo...

The CFL lamp in this old thread sounds worth a go: https://forum.downsizer.net/about75604.html&highlight=lamp

Could be an idea to approach the police for some of the seized lights. They will probably want to inspect what you want to do with them, and be pleased if they get a contribution to the benevolent fund! Worth asking, you have lost nothing, but stand to gain some good cheap lights!

Put some reflectors on the north side & save your electricity.
If you run a 600w HID you definitely need to grow something more valuable than toms just to cover the utility bill.
A lot of people are using LED lights now but I've never played with them.
CFL lamps need to be close to the crop to have any effect (as I suspect so to LED's) but are a lot cheaper to run than HID's & cheaper to purchase.
Also give off a lot less heat.

I use CFLS on my chillis and am planning to use them on my alpine strawberry seedlings. Chillis Galore forum is a great place to learn about lights if you don't want your browser history to all snoop dogg or willie nelsoned up.

You put your plants on the sill of a south facing window. Behind the plants you put a mirror, which can be made from kitchen foil.

Not perfect, but low tech. I've used this method for years. The plants do get a bit leggy though, and you still need to turn them every few days.

Oldish Chris, I've heard of that idea before with the kitchen foil. Would it be an alternative idea to put the plants in front of a north facing window, there is still light but less intense and it my reduce the leggy growth-maybe worth an experiment?
