Our pond is taking shape now!!

That's it ducks in the spring.......

If you peer really closely you can see the water!!! Two underground springs keep it full

What's the shape, depth & any artificial planting? Is it a brand new one or enlargement? Sorry for sounding like a 'pond spotter'

Hi Rob - pond spotting good - a bit keen at momnet!!
New pond to help land drains as we have a number of natural springs, 2 of which form the basis for the pond. Its about 4 foot deep and a wiggly shape as didn't want it to look like a swimming pool?? In this country - unlikely

Planned planting are to relocate the natural flora from the river and lakeside - lilies and flags. The soil is seriously peaty - we are on the edge of Lough Derg and opposite peat bog so the water is spectacularly clear.

Not sure what else to date except a few native trees around edge and a non native weeping willow just for me!

Any suggestions warmly welcomed - its our first excavation!

If you've got wild fowl in the area then I expect plenty of plants will turn up. I'd also be tempted to collect a few local seeds if you can and sow the eath banks then let nature take her course.

You have a great view there plenty of trees.

I'd go with that too- we dug out a small field pond that was all silt, grass & sedges 12 months ago, but the plants certainly came in & look at it now: Pond pic 1 Pond pic 2

It looks lovely and I bet you will be hacking back the growth around the edges by the summer

Good morning !

that looks great ! I'm sure the geese and ducks will be happy ..

you should put a small island on the middle ! where you could house the ducks ..

but is this pond not gonna attract more minks to you ?

More traps arrived this morning along with the saffron bulbs!

We are surrounded by deep drainage canals ( not ditches!) so mink aplenty...Not in traps again yet....

I'm very envious of you people with ponds.
When we moved to where we are now eighteen years ago the previous people had dug out a fairly large pond with an island in the middle, the works.
There was just one draw back. The land that we have is pretty good , a few feet of reasonable soil and then we are down to sand and pebbles. The pond was as dry as a bone.
Its for this reason that all our water feaures take the form of flooded boats.
The next place that we move to will have to have water on it.
From experience Calli , that pond of yours will have eels in it very quickly.
We have friends who had a new pond dug in a similar situation as yours and a couple of years after its completion I set 8 nightlines in it. I had 7 eels out og 8 the very first night and the pond was a good 40 yards away from the nearest water course.
