Should I prune these trees and if so, how much. I am being cautious because I think they do well to survive where they are let alone fruit and the Bramley fruited well. There is a tendency for plants around here to need to huddle together rather than spread out.

Not a great photo as my phone doesn't do exposure levels. There are a lot of dead branches underneath and I wondered whether to at least tidy them off. The rest all cross over each other as they won't have been pruned for about 25 years.

I'd remove some of the crossing branches, do dome this year, and some more next.

Anything crossing/rubbing another branch take out.

Try to remove anything that will grow towards the inner part of the tree or over shadow branches underneath.

Be really ruthless...any small stuff on larger boughs take out.

Your looking to allow as much light and air in to the center of the tree.

Bramleys tend to be bi annual croppers.

Clear away all the rubbish from around the base and give it some farmyard manure if you have some around the rootbase.

you don't have to be toooo ruthless to see a bit of a result.

Definitely take out any dead wood - it is basically just an all you can eat buffet for pathogens that could later spread to other parts of your tree.

That's a good way of looking at it, thank you all.

I will attempt it as soon as the wind drops.

Thats quite a slope its growing on. And so exposed too! Is that a hedge dirrectly behind it?
Its amazing to see the different environments that the same apple variety can exist in.
