If you have a square plot, and want to make 4 raised beds so they fill out the square, would it be best to place the beds running on the north-south axis, or on the east-west axis? In other words, if you have 4 beds, one after another, should the long side or the short side face south. My instincts says the first, but would it really matter? |

it depends upon which way you will put the rows of plants within the
blocks, so that they get the maximum sunlight. Or perhaps which way so that they wont get flattened by the prevailing wind |

If you are growing low growing plants like salads & roots then it doesn't make a jot of difference if on the other hand you want to grow taller plants like climbing beans then you will find if you grow them E to W the north side will produce little produce. |

So N-S might be the best from an all-round point of view? |

I used to have 2 allotments with all raised beds and N-S is best as at some points in the rotation you have plants that need it. |
