I am currently in the early-ish stages of setting up a small business cultivating gourmet mushrooms. A lot of time, energy and money has been spent so far on getting things right but the main problem Ive been having is finding a supplier of mushroom spawn that is not contaminated. I have bought various spawn from mushroombox.co.uk in the uk and although their oyster mushrooms are just about passable, the rest of their spawn was not eg. their Morel, Nameko, Reishi, Blewits and Shitaki were all horribly contaminated. I know this because I inoculated in a sterile environment and I thoroughly sterilized the substrate but after a week or so of incubation the inoculated bags filled with green mould and so I had to chuck them out.
Does anyone here know of a good supplier of spawn in the UK or Europe that can guarantee pure spawn? I know there are several in the US but I want to avoid buying from there if possible.
Thanks.

Thanks. I have that site bookmarked and may give them a try.
What I'm looking for is a spore bank in the UK that has pure cultures but I'm beginning to think there isn't one.

Have you spoken to Paul?

https://www.plantationsystems.com/

He must have contacts even if he can't help you directly, you can PM him here his user ID is Truffle.

I did find a mushroom grower in Colchester once that reckoned he cultivated 50 different species, this might be him but I can't remember:

He was a nice guy to talk to. I did forward his details to Paul at the time so he may have them.

Actually there used to be a Welsh firm that cultivated lots of mushrooms too, they set up the mushroom garden at Raymond Blanc's

might wanna try here:
https://bemushroomed.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=29&Itemid=33

or log onto the gourmet forum of the shroomery to see if anyone will share a slant, wedge or sporeprint of what you want.

Otherwise you might be looking at seeing if Fungiperfecti or Aloha medicinals will ship.

No use for a spawn source but you might find this video interesting.

You may find this site useful

https://www.micro-science.co.uk/mycology/live-cultures.html

You can generate large amounts of your own spawn with these

https://www.micro-science.co.uk/myco-farm-rye-injector-bag-1kg-only.html

Hope this helps..

Hiya,
I too have the same problem finding a good spawn producer in the UK. I too live in West Wales and I'm also preparing for a small scale commercial set-up for growing gourmet mushrooms.
Also trying to avoid importing from the USA, here a recommendation from Paul Stamets - in Belgium but a proper professional spawn laboratory as it seems. At least it's within the EU which should make shipping and fees cheaper.

Welcome to Downsizer Simona. This is a very old thread you have resurrected, but certainly the links should still be worth investigating.

I have used https://www.annforfungi.co.uk/shop/index.php for dowels but I am still waiting for fruiting to start (only did it this winter).

That site was also recommended by Martin Crawford when I did my forest garden course.

They've updated their site since I used them. Anyway, it's on this page: https://www.annforfungi.co.uk/content/store/#!/Beds-&-Patches-in-the-garden/c/14062672/offset=0&sort=normal
