Our fence is going green. I want to paint it or stain it or treat it or something. Do I need to sand it down and what-not, first?

If one didn't have a jet washer, scrubbing with a brush would work?

*goes off to price up jet washers*

God, you really like hard work, dont you?

Borrow a power washer - they are great fun, and you'll be able to do the car, fence, shed roof, patio all sorts and then be knackered and very wet, and probably add to Somerset's water problem....

agreed jet wash first then treat. Question do you know why it is so wet that it is going green?

What wood is the fence made of? Some wood can go green because it has picked up algae, but it won't really do the wood any harm. Also some woods like western red cedar, sweet chestnut or oak don't need and won't take preservative very well.

Go careful with the jet washer; ours has a habit of blowing away the surface of our drive. I know it is not very good, but at least it is there before jet washing.

actually if you just jet wash it, you might get away with just that, but if you want to treat it then cuprinol or something. If your anytime near Tragos (they have a Devon one) or look for a special deal at B&Q or suchlike.... a tin dont go far on a fence though....
