I thought it would be easy to research and decide on a new, well insulated front door, which didn't cost the earth. WRONG!! I'm going round in circles now so thought I'd ask if anyone out there in DS land has fitted a new front door recently and if so how happy are you with it?

Anything with a u value of less than 2 considered except uPVC I just can't bring myself to fit that!

Take a look at Rationel. Not sure of their U values as I no longer have their brochures, but ours is pretty good.

Rationel definitely, plus loads of other Scandinavian/German makes. We used Urban Front (UK) but they're hugely expensive

We've got a massive, horrible velvet curtain, which is cheap and functional. (Because a new door was too much, currently.)

Although these are probably all much lower than 2 they'll all do a cheaper less well insulated version

Put a link to it in your save box. And remember it's there.

I think I'll remember it and can search (you've seen the front door) but I didn't get any of your first sentence.

Thanks all. I'm not in the market for a Passivhaus grade door - just trying to find something which is reasonably well insulated but comes in under a grand...... How quickly my goalposts have been moved : only yesterday I was thinking in the region of £3 -400

I think one of the above will do a door for your budget that performs quite well

OK Tahir, I'll ask them for a quote. Given what I've been looking at though, I'll be astounded if they're anywhere near my budget

Gimme a shout if you don't get anywhere, I'll ask our architect; We had a cheap one knocked up for our larder (external to the insulated envelope )
