Well, when my book comes out in a month or two that would be the perfect thing to persuade your librarian to get in! In the meantime, most of what is out there is divided up by specific time periods, so let me know what sort of thing you'd like to find out more about and I'm sure I can suggest something. There are also lots of resources in the archives over on the EarlyPerfume yahoo group- especially early recipes. |

Ok, its called 'The Artifice of Beauty, a history and practical guide to perfumes and cosmetics' and its being published by Suttons in May all being well. Theres a direct link to it on Amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0750938870/sallypointer-21
which fills in a few blanks, but basically it traces the evolution of human adornment from earliest prehistory to the twentieth century, with lost and lots of reconstructions and recipes to demonstrate exactly what early perfumes, soaps and cosmetics felt, looked and smelt like. Its aimed at people who like to try things out as well as read about them, so blends 'serious academic stuff' with fun hands on experimentation. |

I'm having trouble finding coconut oil: localish Superdrug doesn't have it. Someone mentioned ordering it on the internet: does anyone have an address for that? |

Sarah D bought some from Suma, the food cooperative. I believe they'll even deliver to Wales but you need to place a bulk order, minimum is about £300 I think. However, if you have difficulty getting hold of other "health" things or would like to buy foods in bulk (eg rice pasta pulses dried fruit, most organic processed food too) they're well worth looking in to, especially in your situation where you seem to know a fair few people in the village. |

Bugs: I think you've cracked it for me. The shop where I work already has a Suma account! I'll be putting coconut oil on the order next week!
