Ready at 12 weeks? I was hoping to fatten them up for at least another 6 weeks.

I reckon that would give you a good fat bird - would be interested to know the dressed out weights. I've never managed to keep mine that long because of all the non-modal shagging that starts going on.

I think I said upthread - they are one of the trad breeds that aren't supposed to be fully mature until their second year; and you can definitely see the difference that extra few weeks makes to their growth in our Cockerel Number Two, who was about that age when we got him from Pookie.

If they start getting randy I have the room to separate them from the hens, so if at all possible I'd like to aim for a more mature, fully flavoured bird. I'm certainly being generous with the greens.

Are you feeding them extra corn, too? Just interested to know how your diet (well, theirs) differs from what we feed ours.

We have friends visiting on Thursday and I am going to cook chicken sagwalla for them. Last time we stayed with them, they cooked Tesco-chicken for us and I was waxing lyrical about how different the taste is - ie, the Tesco chicken was just a texture, no taste at all. Now I've got the opportunity to put my money where my big mouth is .

Wot's chicken Sagwalla, Chez? If your trying to show off your chicken, wouldn't something simple let the flavour shine through more? Or am I talking chicken-poo?

Not feeding them corn, just plenty of pellets and loads of greens - broccoli, spinach, cauliflower (leaves) plus all the slugs, clover and grass they want.

Saw one pecking on a bay leaf yesterday, result!

Sagwalla - spinach curry. We have the World's Official Spinach Beet Mountain. Not too much curry powder at all in it though. Long and slow is the best way to cook it I think.

Jonny - ours are eating thyme .

Right, It's necking time for the two of the three cockerels. The other is going to get swapped with a neighbours bird, don't want any nasty inbreeding going on.
