Where do you get flannelette? I'm after some for other projects to, so I want a few metres of it. I'm guessing we're in oxfam territory?

Yes Oxfam would be good. I bought a kingsize bed sheet from a mill shop as I wanted new fabric I think it cost about £14, markets sometimes have them too. Some markets sell flanelette by the yard, especially this time of year for making nighties and pyjamas. I was buying mine April time so couldn't find any, hadn't realised it was seasonal until then. Have you tried fabric shops or department stores eg John Lewis etc? Hope you find some.

Hi Nora and all others,

I made my own Sanpro (Sanitary Protection) about five years ago using an old t-shirt for the two outer layers and an old towelling bathrobe for the inner. They work really well and look great as the t-shirt was purple with a black celtic design. I was able to do a zig zag stitch at the time but now I am using a 1928 singer, like the one you use yourself Nora, I had a fiddly job turning over hems when making a load up to sell cheaply at a festival. Using a bias binding is a brilliant idea so thank you very much for that tip!

I really love using these cloth towels, more hygenic than tampons for us and more hygenic for the environment too, not to mention the cost involved when you think about how many old bits of clothing we can reuse to make them. They look beautiful, they are comfortable and easy to make.

All women who haven't yet tried it, follow Nora's excellent instrutions and have a go!

Cheers Moira
The purple and black you used sounds great, I like your idea of using T-shirts, nice and soft.

Found this site :
http://hempfabric.co.uk/index.html
I've not ordered anything from them but this may be useful for anyone who wants to use hemp fleece for pad liners or nappy making.

[quote="nora"]Have you tried fabric shops or department

Do you know how dangerous it is to send me to John Lewis! Or any fabric shop!? Especially if they do knitting wool as well! and John Lewis has a gardening department - I won't be seen for days

I'm going into town once the courier's been - missed market day yesterday cos of a job interview (got the job though, so I 'spose it's worth it!), but I'll try and resist John lewis.

thanks Nettie

Wellington Womble well done! What is the job?

I am so useless at sewing that I decided to buy some on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ORGANIC-cotton-washable-sanitary-pad-Cloth-sanpro_W0QQitemZ7707182371QQcategoryZ26269QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

They arrived the next day and for the first time in my LIFE I am looking forward to the start of my period so I can have a go at using them!

Thanks - September 5th, so I'm enjoying my 'holiday' till then. It a junior physio position in a private rehab facility in Aylesbury. Not the breadth of experience I'd like, but beats unemployment by a mile (except I won't get to loaf around here all day!) best thing is, its only 20 mins drive away, so no horrid commuiting to London!

Gosh, they seem very cheap - surely that isn't £2.50 for 20?

£2.50 each, 20 available, you buy as many as you want on an auction like that!
