More Celts, how nice. (Are Scottish people Celts? The comment from around the dinner table is that they wear celts. ) |

They are most definitely celts- but I'm not sure what Shetlanders and Orkadians consider themselves....

Ooh, I think not
Picts but not celts.
Don't confuse Orkney with the western isles. Gaelic was never spoken here. Orkney didn't come under scottish rule until the 15th century. Native orcadians still look fondly north, rather than south |

How nice to see you! At last somebody who know what REAL fish taste like, and who can tell those celts why umbrellas are as useless as an ashtray on a bicycle. |

Hello cqueenie! I'm in Unst, good luck with the broch building...
Shetlanders don't usually consider themselves scottish (unless they emigrated from Scotland) it was the picts who built the brochs here, maybe 2000+ years ago, a thousand years later Shetland was extensively settled by viking farmers (whether the vikings killed the picts and took their land, or whether it was more peaceful is a matter of some debate!) In 1469, the king of Denmark pawned the islands (his daughter married James III of Scotland and he needed money for dowry payments) Modern shetland is a mixture of people including incomers of all nationalities. Since the oil came ashore in the 70's the traditional culture and dialect has been on the decline, by the time my kids grow up it will be gone... |
