This is an old thread but a few things have happened since the first post and a few new alternative products to the balloon have appeared on the market. One of them is a felt disk that blocks but allows the chimney to breath - as its made form wools is appropriately named chimney sheep. Not sure sure if its available in the US but it is available here in the UK.
