I've added the sugar at the begining rather than after it has cooked down for the first 30 or so minutes as the recipe says. It's tom and apple. Do I carry on? Will it be sticky mess like marmalade you've boiled too long???

I think it will be OK. You don't jammify it with chutney do you? so you don't boil as long any way.

Carry on. Stir vigorously so that the sugar dissolves quickly. Don't boil it for too long. It'll be fine.

sugar appears to have disolved already. Need to boil it enough to cook the onions and dissolve excess water though..... fingers are truly crossed! I even skinned the tomatoes..... I don't often do that!

I've seen and successfully used chutney recipes which say to put all the ingredients in the pan and then start cooking.
Nice and steady, as Sean says. If it doesn't get to finishing point tonight you can come back to it tomorrow and continue.

coming back tomorrow isn't an option - work then pick up kids then put them to bed then choir practice.... Monday's are busy days! But I guess I could do more on Tuesday....
