Thank you for this detailed reply OP. I have ordered the book from an Amazon seller.

Where do you recommend buying root stock?

Perhaps, I should think of a more intensive site preparation than just the "field" and then use the M27 as you suggest.

THANK YOU EVERY-ONE for these fantastic suggestions. These are great ideas.

I have Helpxers here through until mid Oct, so perhaps I can get them to help.

(Edit for clarity)

I know a few rootstock suppliers, but not in Northern Ireland.

Blackmoor Nurseries can supply M27, but don't do a discount in the unit price even for 80! £2.25 each. Then the carriage is £30.

So I think perhaps I'll only attempt to graft a few. Buying that no at that price would take this project into a whole different league!

While googling around I found another Downsizer thread:

So I'm gradually formulating a plan for the autumn:

I'll plant out these trees on their own roots in a field setting as was my initial plan. I have the space to give them all about 4m (12') each way - maybe more for the ones that are already growing bigger. In spring, I'll snip the leader branch out to encourage branching for taking material for grafting.

I'll buy only a couple of dozen M27 root stock this autumn which I'll plant in a more controlled nursery setting when they arrive. Then I'll graft material from the healthiest looking whole trees onto these next summer as trials.

Next year I might try some more grafts from the other trees that are still surviving!

Then I'll take it from there.

OOOOHHH Yes!

I have about a dozen of their trees round and about already. About half of them fruited for the first time this year.

One is delicious! I might try to graft from it..... (must check it's name)

funny looking at that thread from a couple of years back - like looking at old photos! And I'm trying valiantly to keep Scotts afloat, not knowing then about John Wallis's illness

Trouble is.... although I know these are some of the varieties Ihave out there (I found a list) I have lost the planting plan. It is around somewhere and I will find it......

I have another batch of names too that must be with the planting plan too......

I like Mark Diacano's attitude and writing style - dreadful photo though, the more so as he's an excellent and careful photographer. I saw him at River Cottage / Park Farm and bought a signed copy of 'A Taste of the Unexpected' yesterday, I'm looking forward to reading it.

Thing is - I love starting little note books and things.... it's just I file them somewhere that seemed logical at the time..... and then I start another little book for another little project!
