i really need a good chest freezer so what do folks reccommend .

Check the Energy Efficiency rating.
It used to be just A to G...

BUT for freezers (and fridges) new A+ and A++ categories have been introduced.
'A' rated is no longer the best...

Electricity cost savings on a more efficient freezer can exceed £35 each year. And the saving will increase as energy costs rise...

If you fancy trying out a SAVA plug (topical if you are considering having a go at the latest Downsizer Challenge) then someone is selling them for £3.00 including postage on eBay at the moment - just type "sava plug" into the search engine.

Might have to find the money for one of those - but unfortunately, won't have enough until the end of next week

Could they actually harm your appliance, reduce it's lifespan etc?

I quite often see people offering fridges and freezers on Freecycle, with a great variety of different energy ratings, as you can imagine

Has anyone here ever tried adding to the insulation of their existing freezer?

I have a polysterene block that sits on the lid of mine, It was the packaging it came it and since I have the freezer in the shed and enough room to open the lid with the block attached, I just decided to leave it on. Whether it helps or not I have no idea.

Someone earlier asked if it is possible to use the heat from the heat exchanger, haven't seen an answer yet, but was wondering if the heat could be transfered to somewhere in the same manner (solar powered pump) as Mr Strwbridge uses in his greenhouse?
