Not building a literal bunker certainly. But, as Saint Mears says, skills weigh nothing. Learning to light your own campfire, to catch fish, rabbits etc, how to butcher/prepare them, learning what wild plants are edible. This is the sort of thing that's worth doing whether you're afraid of the imminent downfall of civilization or not.

Interesting... the more 'advanced' we've become, the more vulnerable we've become. It doesn't take the A-bomb to throw the world into chaos anymore, just blockade a few fuel ports.

So true. I was unfortunate enough to be driving between York and Derby last year, the day of the gales. The wind blew a few HGVs over on M1, M18 and M62 - and I mean a few, probably no more than 10 or so. Entire region gridlocked for a day. It really made me realise how vulnerable we are.

How many of us here are already in the position that we could keep going for one month? I probably already have a one month supply of flour and wood in store, add a few water purification tablets and I could probably manage that one month. A small generator just to keep the freezers ticking over would be useful but it's not that difficult a target.

That's one of my reasons for being so reluctant towards entrusting our food supply to centralised technology. The survivor has knowledge, the destroyer has technology.

I seem to have collected an arsenal of weapons that would keep a small army at bay.

Yep, I think we could last well over a month apart from water. I've been very tempted by some of those survival water filters, if the water butts are full we could last for months. As StuP says, picking up plenty of skills can be bad either.
The question is, how do you keep the hoards of zombies from your front door?

Hell, a .22 or 12 bore is far more practical. Ever tried shooting a rabbit with a 7.62?

If I recall correctly head shot to the middle of the forehead!
Actually as the article was only discussing the option of holding out for one month that probably would not be a major problem. The author seemed to be more concerned with problems along the lines of major flooding, short term collaps of fuel supplies etc. issues with a foreseeable end which probably wouldn't cause the large scale collapse of civil order but which would just make living difficult.
Of course if you're considering that kind of total collapse of society then I suspect almost none of us would be capable of surviving simply because we wouldn't necessarily be able to defend our "bunker".

Rabbits?
A .22 won't take down a zombie and a 12 bore is slow to load but you might get 2 or 3 before a reload. An FN P90 is the toy but I'll have to settle for the underlever at least I can 9 shots off quickly.

You have hunting sheep? Is this to get around the hunting with dogs legislation? or have you trained them as guard sheep to use around the bunker?

I have to concede that it would do a very nice job of keeping zombie number down to a sustainable, croppable level.

Bunkers are for fools. You're nailed down to one place with lots of things that attract predators. If you want to 'survive' then travel fast and light, and just carry what you need to eat and to kill. Replenish supplies through predation.

from the way the thread is going, clearly simply having a well stocked bunker is not enough - one must also achieve a pretty good high score on Resident Evil.

Best advice. Learn to sail. Buy a big yacht. Bury lots of food on a very small island somewhere. When it all goes pear shaped set off to sea and visit your island at night to restock. Otherwise stay well clear of the land. And probably an awful lot cheaper than a bunker.

better still = buy a small submarine, because if there are floods, then that very small island will probably be completelyy underwater.
