they have access to layer pellets, grit and i sprinkle a handful of birdseed corn mix most times i go out, and courgette, cucumber and tomato scraps from the chopping board.

i get the odd day of 2 eggs out of the 3, but 5!

Seriously, how deep is their bedding? Mine had a phase of burying eggs, and sometimes they uncovered them again all on their own. Had me going for a good week wondering what the heck Very Happy Usually the older eggs were a bit grubby, and that was actually the clue as to what was happening. Wink

they have a nest box section with 3 separate cubicles, each about 9 inches wide. the straw is about 5 to 6 inches deep when fluffed up. i estimate this would compress to a depth of around 2 inch or maybe a bit more or a bit less after a laying session.

every morning i fluff the straw up and check that it is clean and not damp or soiled with droppings, dampness or runny egg residue. when i ony have 2 eggs from them a hunting i shall go, in search of any eggs. i take your point WB but i am certain the nest box cubicles were empty of eggs this am, and then there were 5.

Sounds weird. Have you tried floating them in water to see if they are all equally fresh?

i have had this with my black rooks & redcos' 5 hens producing 7-8 eggs a day but that is only when they go from pol to layers they lay all sorts of stange eggs too many too big 2 & 3 yokes in some cases but they soon settle down. they can not keep that up for too long they will burn themselfs out.

vm - no, i haven't tried the floating fresh test.

cf - i don't mind an egg a day from each of them but i don't know what i can do to slow them down or regulate them?

3 eggs yesterday, and 3 the day before. jjust checked the boxes and the house and the runs, no eggs.

they started to lay the day after i got them, having not laid for their previous owner.

i shall watch them carefully.
