A dog, a late night trip to vets and getting her to rest

We went for a lovely walk yesterday for most of the afternoon. Took our Springer Spaniel with us as usual and she must have doubled up on our walk so no doubt ran about 10-12 miles or more. She had a lovely time but just before the end of the walk she came back close to us and walking slowly back to car and wasn’t keen to jump in.

She has previously damaged her front shoulder (left side) and so I thought it was probably a bit sore from all the running. After getting home and having tea I noticed she was limping more so took a look and found a big flap of skin hanging under her arm pit on the front left leg and puncture wounds into the flesh.

The vet decided to look at it last night at 9pm and stapled her (8 staples) and flushed it out gave her pain killers and antibiotics and said it looked like a branch or twig had jammed into her leg cut the skin and punctured the muscle. Luckily missing the arteries. She was sleepy last night and left it alone no doubt after the run and pain killers.

Trouble is today she is back to her usual self all lively and wanting to run around. On top of which she is licking the wound. The vet wasn’t keen on putting a collar on her saying she wouldn’t bother it too much. Is there anything I can do to stop her licking it so much and how do I get her to rest.

Can you put a tee-shirt on her? Maybe tape the armholes a bit narrower to keep them snug?

And gentle lead walking only.... I would think some controlled movement would be good to keep blood circulating etc .

Is she still on pain killers? You could talk with the vet about reducing these a little so that her activity is a bit more self limiting?

Hope she mends quickly.

genius sally, t-shirt on she only had pain killers last night so would think its wearing off now. just antibiotics for now

she looks a bit miffed with the t-shirt look but its resticting the licking and will keep it clean thank you so simple an idea but it works

She certainly does, we've used the tee shirt trick on our Beagle, it's very effective.

poor pup

nursing care and a quiet time should work

punture wounds are messy ,monitor for any signs of infection ,

staples itch a bit so the shirt is good

my yellow hell hound did such things several times hope yours learns to look before it leaps in one go .

I used a T-shirt when Charlie had a similar injury, and it worked pretty well. The only problem was that as he was male, the streams of liquid that came out underneath tended to make the T-shirt wet! It was fine when my female GSD needed to wear one after a chest operation. Finsky

AWWWWW...she is so pretty!
And the colour suits her too.. Laughing

Fantastic looking dog....
I sceptically had Ben at the vets for what I thought might be 'that' visit a few weeks ago.

I came back from holiday yesterday, and he has been having a great time with his new friend Jess ( a collie). Both having a younger dog around and being put on thyroid pills has given him a new lease of life. He was positively trotting down the lane yesterday when we had to literally drag him along previously.

We know that the end is in sight, but it makes a big difference seeing him have a new energy about him.
