A new forum for The Kitchen GardenIt has been proposed that we start a new forum to keep track of all the things we downsizers are growing. There would be a seperate thread for each fruit/vegetable etc. and message posters would be requested to adhere to the specific topic of sowing/growing/harvesting the particular item in that thread.
We are looking for a suitable title for this new topic and also for people to volunteer as moderators to "hoe & weed out" the misplaced comments. (no offence to chatterers but there is a forum called chat for this - I should know, being one of the worsed offenders).
Please, everybody have an input as to whether you think this new forum would be of use and what it should be named.
(p.s. I myself have proposed "The Kitchen Garden" not that I am biased)

Ordinarily, yes. Sorry I may have not explained myself properly.
Bugs has suggested that we start to compile a record of what people are growing and how well it is doing.
As you said, normally this would be listed under the heading "grow your own" but as we are trying to make it as concise as possible we are proposing a seperate area for what may be called - "An online, interactive gardening diary" - for want of a better term.
We hope to help each other learn from our successes and mistakes so that we can all have a more prosperous garden each succesive year.
All general gardening comments and questions will continue to be posted under "grow your own"
We need to have a good general interest in this topic before it will become live so all interested parties please post here - we need your input. S

Sounds good, how about a few examples of what we could expect to see?

i have thought about doing a few wiki type pages in a similar vain, people could add tips and have photo links of how their stuff is growing. What soil each person has, how much each plant is watered. Every plant could have a different page. Maybe an interactive map with growing times/conditions around the country/globe. Could take up a shed load of disk space but on the plus side, With loads of peoples input could be an invaluable resource. Could something like that be done, and would it be worth it? Now this time am I making sense

Right, no problem sounds OK to me.

Sounds good but will the new patch be tended regularly? I'm still waiting for more pics of people's potatoes to use for a 'how to grow' article.
We could start off with say, 5 types of plants in the grow your own section for this year and see how it goes? Pots, Toms, Chilli, A. N. Other and her friend?
If all goes well we could start one next year (does anyone remember when they sewed their tom seeds this year?)

Yep! I right everything down. It has to be done for future reference.
My tomato seeds went in on 20th March. sown in the greenhouse (not heated) and re-potted on 24th April.
No reason why we should wait 'til next year for this Treac'

How about calling it "seed trials" or "fruit and veg trials", as I think the post is a good idea but "Kitchen Garden" is too close to "Grow your own" and "recipes, preserving and homebrewing" IMHO.

Yep, growing trials or something like that. Can we include details like soil type/pH, aspect (North facing or whatever), shelter, frequency of watering, what type of fertilizer... If these are missing it's hard to compare, for instance, whether Bugs' Gardeners Delight are doing better than mine, while she gardens on dry, sandy soil in full sun and I'm on damp clay in shade. If either of us got any tome in those circs. with no fertilizer or watering I'd be gobsmacked!
