It's not a challenge as such, more a plea for help.

The blog post is Here. And the pertinent bit is:

Quote:
I also need your help. Every Christmas I send a parcel of gifts to the women in a refuge managed by another friend and this year I want to send scarves. Now I could just go and get some from a shop, but how much nicer would it be if some of my readers here could make them? I値l need 10 for the refuge I知 currently supporting but if I can manage more then maybe I can extend the idea further afield?

Any knitters out there who could help? If my knitting lessons go well then I値l make at least one!

So far I have pledges for 4 and maybe's for another 2. Scarves to be sent to me (pm if you need my address or look Here) I'll make sure they're wrapped in Christmassy paper and sent of to my friend who is the refuge manager.

I'm looking at it like sending a hug to someone who needs it.

Thanks! I am inspired to add finishing the scarf to my list of UFOs for September and pledge to send it to you, Soapnutter. I like the idea Cool
Mrs Fiddlesticks

Soapnutter that pledge deserves a separate thread for other knitters who may not look in this one cos its a lovely idea ( does it need separating, mod friends?)
Jamanda

Erm hang on a minute (no-one gives you any training you know....)
Frewen Feltmaker

I cast one off yesterday that you can have if you want - just give me a day or do to weave the ends in and do the join more neatly and it's yours Very Happy
Jamanda

I did it! Erm I could maybe knit a scarf if they aren't too fussy.
Mrs Fiddlesticks

tempted to have a go - let me find some nice wool. I can manage a scarf I'm sure!
Soapnutter

Oh you folks are bringing tears to my eyes. You're all just wonderful.
Thank you.
Jamanda

I don't know if if this is of any help to any one - I know most of you could probably knit scarves in your sleep.

KrisWW

Two scarves coming from here. And if we get more than ten pledged, we can make up a parcel for another refuge. Very Happy

That's a great link, Jamanda Cool I may have a go at making deliberate/intended holes in my next scarf Rolling Eyes Laughing
mochyn

I've got one (or maybe two) that you can have after the show this weekend!
sharonb

I'll knit one - I'm sure I have a scarf half finished hiding in a bag behind the sofa! I started knitting it for myself even though I don't like anything around my neck.
rivergirl

will try and knock a scarf off for you as well any other ideas for things we could do ???
wellington womble

When would you like them by? I'm not very good at deadlines, but I'm sure I could charm something up over the next few weeks or so.
Soapnutter

I post out at the beginning of December so you have loads of time!
Grenwich

Do they all have to be home made? I've got a shop bought woolly scarf and glove set which was given to me just after a friend had already knitted me a set. Shall I send it? Gx
Soapnutter

They don't have to be home made Grenwich, that'd be lovely, thank you.

First scarf arrived today - I love you people, you're warming hearts and making such a huge difference, and bringing a tear to my eye and the refuge manager's too. You're all just wonderful.

Thank you, thank you.

Rivergirl - The possibilities are endless. This is a simple gift for women who need it. It's something I am able to do and I have the contact to do it. I'm sure we could do more if we thought about it and organised ourselves.
mochyn

Can you pm me your address? Both scarves are now prize winners!
Soapnutter

PM sent Mochyn, thank you so much.

Anyone else needing my address - it is Here on the Ethics Trading contact page.

Actually I've got a couple I could send if premade ones are acceptable.
Frewen Feltmaker

send those and the handmade one Cool
Soapnutter

Send em ALL!

The more scarves I get the more women in refuge we can give a Christmas present to, and I'd love for this to be bigger than the initial 10 women in the first refuge I send to.
KrisWW

More than ten scarves mean that we can make up another package for another refuge. I'm hoping that will be the Doncaster one if Sarah's contact can find out who/where to send it to. Smile
Soapnutter

I'll get on it for you Kris.
mochyn

Shall I start a thread about this on Ravelry? The people there are SOOOO generous and I belong to a RAK group there. I could add a link to you.
Soapnutter

It's been suggested I go and join Ravelry..... Like I don't spend far too much time online as it is.....

Please do Mochyn, you could always link to this thread? Or to me direct via email or one of my sites - up to you.
mochyn

Consider it done, Sarah.

Anyone who looks on Ravelry will find the thread in the UK Random Acts of Kindness group.
sheepieness

Hiya all Smile

Mochyn left this thread on the RAK uk at ravelry and i just had to join you Very Happy

I will be happy to make a scarf for the cause. I might cheat slightly and use my knitting machine but it will be made with love all the same.

Thanks for letting us know about this Mochyn xxx
Cathryn

Hello, nice to meet you. I am on Ravelry as well but currently have forgotton all my log in details. Embarassed Good thing probably, have more than enough on the go as it is. Smile

Hope you stick around and enjoy this site as much as we do.

Croeso, cariad! Nice to see you here. Have a mooch round: there are some fascinating threads. Anything you want to know, someone here will know the answer! Laughing

Re:Scarves

I'll happily join in and send some!
Soapnutter

Ok, I'm a bit gobsmacked. I now have promises of almost 20 scarves and I have the addresses of two refuges with a couple of extra's so I'll be finding a third address in a day or so.

This is incredible. Thank you all, so very much.

If that was changed ever so slightly it becomes Acts of Random Kindness, which is A.R.K. The world can be changed (saved) by one single Act of Random Kindness at a time. (respect to Morgan Freeman for that one)

scarf appeal

Sarah, how soon do you need them please? Smile

Yup: my feelings entirely. That's how I try to change the world. If I don't start with me, my family, my friends, what hope have I?

Anytime before the beginning of December is fine, thanks.
Mrs Fiddlesticks

I'm half way through one.

See I like this knitting lark just need to learn to make more than a scarf but doing one for you gives me practice.
Frewen Feltmaker

Perhaps you could do cables in your next scarf then? Very Happy

That would be a good new technique Cool

Not that I'm any good at them myself - more thinking out loud Embarassed

I bought my sock wool and needles today so hoping to tackle that first but may well put the scarf in the bag as well ( can't hurt)
mochyn

If you can get a cable needle too we'll have a go.
Frewen Feltmaker

See Mrs F - Cool

Now you can't say no! Laughing
sheepieness

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I do know that there are another 4 replies to mochyn's thread on Rav for scarves.. better get that other address Very Happy

S x
Soapnutter

Hmm, I gave in and applied to join Ravelry but it'll be a while I think before I get in.
Frewen Feltmaker

It won't be long Wink
Soapnutter

It'll be when it is. Do I need to learn to knit now then? Shocked
Becki

I can't knit. Can I send you a notebook instead?
vanessa

I can't knit either, but wanted to say this thread has brought tears to my eyes. What a lovely bunch of people there are on this (and other) forums. Sarah, I hope you end up with a huge parcel of scarves to distribute ... you're certainly well on the way! Very Happy
Soapnutter

it's scarves this time, maybe we can do something else next time? Or, maybe send anything and I'll package it up and send a mixed parcel to somewhere.

Oh what the hell, send whatever you want!

Vanessa, I know, it's just so fabulous isn't it?
Becki

sent you a pm soapnutter.
Soapnutter

Got it and replied Becki, thanks.

I'm on Ravelry now too - as SharkBait, look for Nemo - and between the 2 places I have 25 scarves promised (and that's counting people who said "some" or "a couple" as only one!)

I'll have to find a third refuge contact....
sharonb

I have a scarf ready to post, I'll get it out to you later this week.
jamila169

I'll see if i can get one done - looking for an excuse to knit up some handspun that's too nice for the shop!
frewen -how long is it before ravelry are letting people on? I sent a request off last week

It took 3 or 4 days for me I think?

Notebooks arrived this morning, they're beautiful, thank you.
Frewen Feltmaker

It took a couple of days for my invite to come - I was suprised at the speed (I was expecting to wait a couple of weeks) Smile
Soapnutter

Yay, welcome to the dark side..... Umm, I think ....
Frewen Feltmaker

I've been in the dark side for a bit Wink

Haven't visited recently though - must remedy that Embarassed

More than 10? There are now 30 scarves pledged. Shocked I'm speechless.

And that doesn't happen very often.

Pilsbury

I know there are plenty of refuges that provide an excellent servise and escape route, my mum used to be on the commitee of our local one, and would never take from their cause but if you struggle to find enough addresses for them, you could always distribute extra scarves to the homeless in the area.
Soapnutter

I won't be struggling just yet, but that's a fab idea too.

Kris... love8 I love you too.... cheeky mare....

Scarves arrived today, thank you so much!
Ginkotree

Please may I have the address of where to send a parcel...I love random acts of kindness, what is the websight thing, has anyone one read pay it forward ?.Both of these things have made my life more than happy
Mrs Fiddlesticks

Hi Soapnutter - I could do with your address as well in a Pm please. I've one finished and another one imminently so
Nell

i have only recently re-learned to knit and can only do straight lines at the mo so will have scarves to pass on. do you still need and is there a dead line?
Soapnutter

My address can be found Here. Or I can PM if anyone prefers that. Mrs F and Gingkotree - I'll PM you.

HelenM - the fairly fluid deadline is beginning of December and I'll find Refuge homes for all the scarves I can get - so far I have promises or actual scarves for 50 women in 6 refuges across the country - there are loads more!
Soapnutter

Scarves arrived this morning from Marigold and Mrs F - thank you!
Soapnutter

Oh, a mystery scarf arrived today! Anyone want to claim responsibility?
Soapnutter

It's fast approaching the end of November and I'm starting to think about getting the final scarf numbers finalised, and then getting them wrapped and sent out.

Are there any more to come from here? Just checking....
Soapnutter

Two more arrived this morning, addressed to "Soapnutter" so I'm assuming someone from here - the return address on the back of the jiffy bag says "Alison Hama"? I think?
alison

Embarassed me
Homa, bad writing.
Soapnutter

Hey! It was only one letter, not that bad!
Thank you hon, lovely scarves.

Now I have trouble keeping my kids away from the pile I'm accumulating coz they're all so lovely and soft, and warm.....
Soapnutter

That's my double bed, covered! I'm amazed, thank you all so much. Between those and others going directly from the person closest - there are over 100 going out.

cheers hello1
