a quickie fundraiser for use at village hall events

Just got in from a fundraising ceilidh, where they had a method of raising a bit extra money that I've not seen before :

Needs 2 people to run it - 1 to MC and persuade people to enter, 1 with a tape measure and a glass to collect the money in.

The dancefloor is cleared.
What would otherwise be an expensive raffle prize (in this case, twas a bottle of whisky) is placed in the middle at one end.
People take it in turns to roll/throw/etc £1 coins at the prize, from the other end of the hall.
Whoever gets theirs nearest wins it.

Remove all but the nearest coin as the event proceeds, and remember whose it is.
Coins can be knocked out of the way by others.
The tape measure is useful in case of dispute/close finish
People seemed to be having a maximum of two attempts, in general.
The eventual winner seemed to feel obliged to have a couple of additional attempts.

By this means, about £100 was made, over and above the door proceeds and the raffle.

That sounds a simple and fun way to raise a bit of extra cash Gil. I will pass the idea on to friends of mine who organise a community new year event every year....they are always looking for new ideas.

I've seen that work well at ceilidhs too, Gil. Easy, fun way to raise quite a bit of cash.
