A really big mixing bowl?

I had an enormous, very thick pyrex like mixing bowl. It was ancient and I pinched it from an ex and really very useful. Ideal for doing several cakes worth of mixture in one go, and still let madam loose with a wooden spoon without it sploshing over the sides.

I stress the 'had' part. Effling was scraping the last of the mixture out and knocked it on the floor this morning, where it shattered. She is utterly inconsolable that she broke it, despite reasurances that accidents happen and I'm not cross.

She is frightened I won't let her mix anymore I think and I think I shall have to ignore the buy nothing new challenge and get a replacement pronto. Had a flick through lakeland catalogue but they don't seem very big and ideally I didn't want a plastic one. Which sounds daft I know given todays breakage, but I much prefer heavy based mixing bowls.

Where can get a large non plastic mixing bowl?

Carpenters have the traditional kind with the sandy coloured glaze.

Get her to help you hunt round charity shops. I often see big brown bowls in them. In fact, I don't think I've ever bought a 'new' one.

Tell her she has friends here who won't blame her and could possibly find a replacement for her. Stermat (local outlet) may have one, will have a look at the weekend.

It is so disproprtional how upet she is about it. I think perhaps the fact it made a god almight crash as it shattered just sounded dramatic enough to her, that she thought I was pretty much guaranteed to be displeased.

Mochyn - good idea!

Yep, they have the big beige coloured ones.
How big is big Effie?

I think they might have blue and white stripey ones too.

Has to hold at least a two loaf tins worth of ginger cake mix, with enough height on the sides that enthusiastic & cack handed stirring with a large wooden spoon won't bring most of it over the sides, child, floor and kitchen. What was good about mine was that the sides were quite high, as well as it being wide. If that makes the slightest bit of sense? Very Happy

I have an enormous stainless steel one that I bought in the US lots of years ago - that is pretty indestructable. I have seen them in the UK but no idea where as I have never had to replace it Laughing But stainless steel is the suggestion....

Amazon do a 5lt stainless steel bowl
but it's £9.00 Shocked
Charity shops are a good idea

I got one of those sandy coloured ones at the car boot sale for 50p recently.

All my mixing bowls are steel- the largest one, in the 1983 earthquake would pick up the aftershocks and sit there by it self, humming, ting....ting....ting.... Shocked Shocked Very Happy

Hold your horses, I may have a spare - we have two big steel ones I use regularly and a large sandy coloured one that I never use.

I have one that is pot that was from Sainsburys, and Ikea have *huge* stainless steel ones (sold as fruit bowls). Um. Glass I've seen in kitchenware type shops but all at slightly scary prices... Oh! Morrisons sometimes have huge pyrex bowls too!

I have a huge mason cash mixing bowl that will do four 2lb loaves of bread. I wouldn't part with it for the world.
