Advice needed on double glazed front door

We had our new front door fitted today. Its a real posh jobbie, a door and a fixed panel at the side of it that is identical to the door, and the same size too - its a double doorway. Its half glazed, with a pattern in the middle. So what is the problem? Well, the glass is clear, with the result that anyone stood in our porch can see up the passageway, up the stairs Shocked and into the room by the front door if its door is open.

Its a lovely door but the clear glass means that we have totally lost our privacy in the hallway and the stairs. When we discussed with the firm what we wanted, I asked the chap if the glass would be frosty like we had at present and he said yes. I wasnt here when they fitted it, so had rather a shock when I got home.

I tried ringing him but he wasnt there, I will ring again later, however I cannot see that he will replace it as it cost rather a lot of money..... We've been discussing what we could do about it, and the best idea I've had so far is to stick some sort of opaquey stuff on the inside of the glass so that any callers cannot see into the house (well not as easily as at present anyway). However I dont have a clue what sort of stuf I would need or where I could find it.

Any advice welcome - I hate complaining and am really nervous about ringing the fitter as he's a lovely chap and I'm sure that he has no idea that the glass isnt what I was expecting.

Woa!

If you ordered frosted glass and didn't get it, shout at them.

I'd be wanting a free refit of a frosted glass panel.

I think it's quite common for companies to get orders wrong so I would certainly raise it with them and expect them to replace the glass. Do you have a copy of the order with the details of the glass?

I had to reject a front door I ordered as it had so many mistakes with it and I went through over 10 glass units for the existing door before one was made without an obvious defect.

What the others said, if you're really not going to complain then there are lots of films that you can apply to glass (reflective/translucent/opaque) but they all cost dosh, lots if it's going to look nice.

You didn't get what you paid for - it should be changed free of charge. And if you haven't yet paid in full for goodness sake don't stump up a penny more until it IS changed.

get what you ordered Wink

I chose what I wanted out of a catalogue he gave me, and he wrote the details in his book, I never had any paperwork. He's a local chap with a good business, he's no cowboy, thats for sure. I may not have used the term "frosted glass" but I said something like "it will have fuzzy glass like this one (the door we had at the time), wont it - we dont want people seeing in", to which he replied "oh yes... etc".

In that case it shouldn't be an issue, in our business we always pay for any mistake we make, however much it costs.

if i fitted the wrong glass i would sort it asap

I'd try to get them to replace it but you can get spray on stuff for glass that makes it look like it's been etched and turns it opaque.

But the door you now have doesn't have frosted or fuzzy glass.
He should remember the door you chose from the catalogue, and be able to find it in his notebook.

I really don't think asking for a replacement will be a problem, Marionb, so just phone him up and tell him what's happened.

Did he make the door himself or order it from another company, it could be that someone else has made the mistake.

Then I am sure he will want to put matters right - no need to get cross with him, just say a mistake has been made, you were expecting frosted glass and it needs to be changed. He won't want to risk his good reputation by upsetting a customer.

Thank you all - you're being very helpful Very Happy

My trouble is that I hate complaining, I'm one of those people who find it hard to complain about things Embarassed

He does the measurements etc etc and puts an order in to another company for the goods, and then he fits it himself.

I just cant understand why he didnt realise before fitting it that we wouldnt want plain glass.... if only I'd been here.... just never expected this... Sad

Then there's a good chance the company he ordered it from may have made the mistake. He probably didn't realise because he fits all sorts of different types of door. Certainly worth asking, that's not complaining. Wink

You could well be right there, Treac..... I just spoke to him on the phone and he's going to ring the company tomorrow and let me know.....

Fingers crossed.....

Very Happy
