Advice on blade repair needed

I've been trying to fix a large notch taken out of a pair of sheers, by building up using OA welding and then roughing out with a grinder and finishing off with a hand file, I'm nearly there but I keep having problems because if I find I have small gaps once I've got it almost to shape and try to fill them, the heat melts away the blade at the thin point. I suspect it's just a case of keeping building and grinding until I get it right but if there are any words of wisdom to make this easier, would love to hear!

I'm a pretty inexperienced welder so don't shy from pointing out what may seem obvious!

Cheers

Have you thought about peening it with a hammer and a jig if you have such things available? If you've filled the biggest holes in, bashing some more metal down into place and then sharpening as you've been doing would finish off.

Short of that it sounds like you might be looking for someone to do some blacksmithing for you.

What sort of steel is your welding rod? Chances are it won't take the same temper as the blade, I'd have thought. Peening out the existing steel would make for a better repair in that case.

Anybody fancy elaborating on how I'd go about the peening process? I'm sure you're right about the steel, I'm just using ordinary oxy rods, nothing specialised.
