Age discrimination

According to a note in the 2008-9 Adult Ed. courses brochure my local college "...is no longer able to offer age-related discounts following the introduction of Age Discrimination legislation.".

Sounds like utter codswallop to me! But if it's correct does that mean that older people will no longer be able to get discounted home/motor insurance etc?

Is it age discrimination to give people over 60 free bus passes if people under 60 aren't allowed them?!
RichardW

Bet they dint think about that. So childrens reduced cost tickets on buses & entry to fun parks too should go. What about discounts on TV licences for the blind thats "see or not see ist". Where should it start / stop?

Sounds to me as though they're using the legislation as an excuse to charge more. After all no-one's going to check are they? They'll just blame the government instead of the college for the hike in fees.
(Having said that I haven't bothered to check either and they could be right.)

It sounds fair to me if it's replaced with discounts based on income / benefits etc.

There have always been discounts for people on means-tested benefits.

Sean - looks like it's true http://www.berr.gov.uk/employment/discrimination/age-discrimination/page26492.html

Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Do people on means-tested benefits get free/subsidised bus travel? The all-over-60s can have free off-peak bus travel thing really bugs me. Disabled people and low-income people - yes. All over 60s - no!

Is it just me but the paragraph under

What might be a legitimate aim?

Has a diagonal row of G's over 5 rows that realy stands out. Thought I had a busted screen as it makes a line on my laptop.
Looking at the guides its not specificaly stopping them just making them justify why they are doing it.
