And now geese...

I'd like to raise a couple of geese for the Christmas table. Anyone ever done this? What breed do I need? Will they live with the ducks? Anything else?!?!?!?!

Hello mochyn,

I'm a newbie to geese too but I do know they live with ducks and chickens in harmony (most of the time).

I got six assorted eggs from a friend the day he was moving house and put them under a wee L.Sussex/bantam cross who sits on anything:

She sat (or I should say perched! Wink ) happily and turned the eggs with no problem and no intervention from us.

Eight weeks later, they are huge beasties and two of them are Toulouse - which are the best for eating apparently:

They eat a lot - always have their heads down and we give them what we give the chickens. They leave lost of the garden alone, but have nibbled all my aubergines and peppers. Confused

Cheers for that HWH: I'll seek some out. We always have goose for Christmas dinner, and I'm aiming at having our own this year, so I suppose I ned to get them quite soon to give them time to get nice and fat!

Dave D,

I really do know what you mean, and that's a lovely 'photo. (I do like seeing people's pics! Very Happy )

There's a few of my hens I couldn't eat either, they'll die of old age or get killed by a fox.

I used to keep hens only for pets and their eggs. The somebody gave me a cock and the girls had babies and some of them were boys and meanwhile I was buying chicken to eat. Confused

Then the boys grew up and started fighting with each other and gang raping the girls and the whole thing just fell into place and I followed my non-- vegetarian instincts salute

It is weird to us, killing and eating birds and animals, but I think it's actually quite normal in the whole scheme of things.

It is weird though.

Killling people on buses and tubes and arms ripped off and tears and fear and racism and all that stuff is weird too...mumble...mumble...

There's a lot of things to think about today eh?

Yeah...crappy day. Lets talk about chickens again, please?
