and yet another, do I want this laptop?

first option

is there any reason why no to go for this?

or this

second option

and whatever i get, i can get office 07 to add to it for about 40 quid.

IMHO the Toshiba is a bit better than the medion.
I'd be wary of refurbished laptops off fleabay (but thats just me).
All depends what you want it for. If you're planning on making the next Disney/Pixar toon thingy in your living room neither will cut the mustard.

thre's someone selling off an unknown lappy and a company selling off dozens of these a week. makes them a bit more trustworthy.

i'm looking for something that is a replacement for a desktop, portable, has to be a laptop rather than a mini, i can't do the tiny screens and keyboards. battery life isn't the vital thing, I can plug it in at college and home and won't use it on the go that much.

but i'm not looking for serious gaming or graphics work beyond photoshop.

For what you are paying for that - you can get a new one here with a much better spec

I'd also be very wary about refurb's

now i know i want that laptop
Chez

Don't bother paying for MS Office though, whichever you decide - get Open Office for free.

I find sitting down gives you an instant laptop. It doesn't require time to boot up and is ready as soon as you sit down. When you stand up it switches instantly into another role and then back again when needed.

Dont get the ACER.

I have an ACER Extensa. The € key fell off. Its only 6 months old so I thought the warranty would cover it. Acer UK refused to do any thing under the warranty, then the BIG shock was that they would not supply a key on its own just a FULL keyboard at a cost of £30 plus fitting (must be a 1p part). The sellers would exchange my laptop for a new one but you all know the hassell that is sorting out a new one so I stuck it back on with super glue.

Avoid ACER

(note to acer if I can stop just one sale of one of your laptops you will have wished you fixed mine you tight gits I hope you go bust)
Nick

ACER are what my wife gets issued every year by school. Luckily, the school year is only about 10.5 months long. They almost last that long. Luckily, they also seem to take about 4 weeks to deliver, knocking their academic use down to 9.5 months. 2/3 have lasted that long, but only just.

I'm afraid I'm with Richard.

My previous one is a Lenovo & is still going strong (daughter has it) after 3 years. OH has a Fujitus Siemans & thats been ok for the year or so she has had it. They were all sub £400 ones but each one has been bigger/faster than the last as is the way.

i can get m$ for 40 quid. that makes it more worth it

I've got an Acer and have had it for 3 years. In use pretty much every day and the only problem I've had is that the left click button has now just about had it (apart from when I picked up a nasty that completely flattened the hard drive which had to be replaced Mad ).

Seriously though, is there much to choose between different makes or are they all much the same?
Chez

I think that if you did a survey of every single customer, rather than just the ones who were particularly happy or particularly cheesed off, there wouldn't be a great deal to choose from, except at the higher end of the market where people are regularly spending thousands on new technology that isn't quite proven yet. IMO.

I'm with Chez. The so-called computer manufacturers are in fact computer assemblers. The bits inside are a permutation of components from various manufacturers, e.g. Intel, Fujitsu etc.

I've ordered the acer, it looks like by far the best deal for the money.

I wasn't impressed with the number of add ons that site tried to stick me with at the checkout, or the phone call trying to sell me security software and an extended warranty. however, i can deal with a few irritations for the money.

thankyou jocorless for pointing me at that.

That might be true but its not just what you sell but how you treat your customers when things go wrong.

Extended warranty? Sale of goods act means the item should be fit for purpose for up to 6 years.

Trouble is your rights are with the seller not the maker.

As the seller would swap it the seller was offering good service. But as I am sure you know to return a laptop just cos one key has come of would be silly in the exstream. The part would be less than 1p's worth & take 0.5 seconds to fit.
