Animal Feed PricesFeed for animals is going to be at a premium this winter as Eastern Europe burns and Western Europe floats. Grains and forages are going to be in short supply so expect Horse, cattle, sheep, Pig , dog and poultry foods to rocket and 'good' hay will be worth its weight in gold.

Have you been making your own, seeing as you've got a scythe ?
This is something that smallholders can usefully do on small areas of grass - hay can be cut, turned and stacked by hand, in weather that does not suit larger-scale mechanical methods.

My long grass in the orchard that I cut for my ponies has not made hay. It is like dung this year. I shall have to buy some.

We need a quick hay-making article.

There is no rush. Unless you have taken a first cut already the grass stalks left will be too woody/seedy to make good quality hay now. An article for next year would be good.

There is a little bit in the latest Country Smallholding mag about making hay by hand.

Some folk might have - I mowed one area nearly two months ago, so looking forward to the regrowth.

Good luck, lets hope the weather has settled. I've raked up my 'dung' and grass is growing well. I shall probably try again, but it will not be as good as the first cut should have been.

We are in the process of making hayledge at eh moment. Baling should be tomorrow, and it is looking good.
It is such a relief to get it done, after the weather we have had.
