Annexing landWhere I live there is lots of green open spaces with pathways - it's part of the reason we live here ! It's all maintained by the local council.
Opposite my house is one of these areas, then the back gardens of the houses in the next street....

Nearly opposite our house is the above - left hand side is the back and side wall of a garage, the dotted line marks the back fence of a property and the line on the right and the vertical is the side and part of the back boundary of another house.
The owner of the dotted line house has just erected a fence annexing off this small piece of land. According to the plans of the area we have, he doesn't own this land.
We now look out over a bloody great fence rather than the trees and shrubs on this piece of land. Should I tell the council ? I'm pretty sure it's their land - if he's bought it I suppose that's OK but I don't want lots of people extending their gardens or there won't be any nice green open areas around.
It's where I have recently seen a green woodpecker, heron, wax wings and greenfinches as well as the more normal garden birds. In Basildon of all places !

I don't suppose that there would be any harm in having a word with the council,

He is prob hoping that no one complains then after "X" years he will be the legal owner of it.

It's worth finding out - he may have bought it. My brother bought a chunk of verge off the council and incorporated it into his garden.

I don't mind if he has bought it - although he's spoiled our view somewhat ! I just doubt he has - the fence was put up a few days after another property had a new fence - same contractors, seems a bit fishy to me!

Sorry - must press submit so quickly !
Had a word with 'estates' dept at council who think it's all their land and haven't sold any to anyone so they're going to send someone round to have a look.
Now I feel like a real nosey neighbour !

oooerrr, estates came back to me to say it's not been bought as it would never be up for sale as there are restrictions on the land use. Home owner has been very naughty and will have to take down the fence, remove the waterbutt he's installed, and if he's removed any plants (he has !) he will have to pay for them to be reinstated.
Cheeky sod!
