Another devon newbieHi i'm carl.
I've had an allotment for 2 years now and doing ok but i need more room to expand as i have a big family to feed so looking into renting a field.
The fields i'm looking at are very rough with brambles and will need lots of work to get it ready for veg production and possible livestock.
The questions are;
1 - Can over grown land be used for veg / livestock production.
2 - after all the legel stuff to do with livestock is there any other thing that could stop you keeping livestock on a field.
3 - How much space will 2 weaners need in a field to get to pork slaughter age.
Any advice will be useful.

welcome
1. yes - so long as you can put the work in.
2. I spose they could be rubbish dumped on the land that might be dangerous to animals? you need decent fences. Your rental agreement might stipulate what you can and can't keep. you might want to look out for ragwort which is poisonous to many animals - but it can be pulled up. you will need water on site - is there any? if the land is boggy or has a stream through it , you might have to consider the problems of liver fluke if you have sheep - but you can treat against this.
3. - dunno - but others keep pigs here.. so hopefully someone can answer this one

Hello there. Welcome to the forum - the Devon members are by far the nicest.
It might be worth you re-asking your questions in the appropriate forums - livestock etc - not that anyone minds them being here, it's just more people might see them there.

Thank you for the warm welcome,
I've had a look around this sight and found a figure of 150m2 for two pigs and that's ok because i was thinking of twice that.
If i get the field i'm hoping for then a stream runs along the bottom so no problem with water but not sure about the ragwort.
I know the field next to it had pigs and horses in them a few years ago and they are owned by the same family so permission should not be a problem.
There is two more adults and 3 teenagers to help me clear the field so i may get more field for less money if i put up with alittle hard work into a field no one else will touch.

Get an electric fence and get the pigs to do the clearing for you. It's amazing how quickly they'll turn over an area of overgrown grass / scrub. Just move them and the fence to another bt once they've cleared an area for you.

looking around slade area , and maybe a couple of possibilities but it's asking permission via friend of a friend so waiting to see if they can be let .
There's nothing definate yet but asking questions on here before signing any leases , but interested if you know of any small fields around ilfracombe that could be up for rent.

What size are you looking for? I will ask around.

I'm looking for around 1 acre or maybe up to 2 but it's maily down to price of around £200 a year as on low income .
The other problem it has got to be in walking distance as i don't drive and the person coming in with the field does but i don't want to have to work around there time table because i can fit more hours in the week.
I know it's a big wish for the money and it may not be possible but if i keep looking then i may find one.
Sorry to be vague about where i'm looking but land is short around ilfracombe and there may be visitors to the site that are thinking along the same lines. Hence why i'm looking at fields that most people would over look or a farmer would not waste there time with.
Time i have lots, of money is in short supply

Nearly a month now, work is coming in thick and fast, I honestly can't believe how much there is to be honest, and while a couple of days have been an absolute wash out, for the most part it has been the most amazing weather I could have asked for...............
