Antivirus 2008????I had a load of pop ups on me laptop earlier from Antivirus 2008 saying that I had a load of Trojans and what not!!!
I couldn't get rid of it as it wanted me to run/save things and all that crap so I shut it down.
I started it up again and ran a full scan (Symantec) and nothing was found but then I had a Google and found this.

I run the "free" scan thingy with SpyHunter and it picked up 199 infections but to "kill" them I have to sign up.
I'm crap with things like this, any advice on what to do?

From wiki, regarding spyhunter
| Quote: | | An online review by Adware Report stated "We recommend that you avoid this product at all costs. It failed to remove any spyware in our tests and the scan results were filled with false positives, a probable marketing ploy designed to separate fools and their money." |
Either trust your symantec if it is up to date, or download the free avg 8.0 and spybot.

I update my Symantec almost daily, should I be worried about the 199 "infections" that SpyHunter found?

I also have Windows Defender and that's not picked anything up.

I'm not an expert, but I would suggest that spyhunter is your problem

Cheers Jonnyboy, think I'll ignore what SpyHunter has detected.

do some further research. Windows defender isn't perfect.

I've got Symantec too and after doing a full scan it is showing nothing nasty.
It's the 199 "infections" that SpyHunter has supposedly picked up that is worrying me, god I'm a worrier!!!
Reading through all this blurb doesn't help.

Join the club. I'm a worrier too.
Apparently there are quite a few programmes like the one that popped up on your computer who are using our insecurity to sell their products.
These are unsafe!!!
Anything that comes floating unasked for must be regarded with the highest suspicion. We pay for our antivirus programmes, and Symantec is very good as long as it's updated regularly. The fact that this new-found friend of yours found 199 viruses/trojans and that it keeps popping up just shows you that it is a scam. Why not 16 or 146 viruses? It's like buying something for £ 199 and considering it cheap because it cost you less than £ 200.
My advice as a secure-concious fellow worrier: Do not believe in whatever comes floating on your computer that you have not asked for or downloaded by yourself. Ignore the whole thing, trust in Symantec and take pity in the many unlucky people who actually download and pay, just to discover that they let the Devil in through the back door.

Jonny's advice is good - I'd load spybot and I'd also load adaware and run them weekly.
We had dreadful problems with symantec not being dreadfully effective - I use AVG now - the free version is just as good as the pay for one.
It does sound like 'spyhunter' is a nasty - but spybot and/or adaware should be able to deal with it, it's what they're designed for. In my experience, anti-virus such as symantec aren't as good as purposed-designed trojan hunters for this kind of thing.
