Anyone know how broadband contention works?I mean I know the bit where if two people use my (note that bit "my") connection then instead of 2 meg I can only get 1 meg. But is that limit set by the physical wire or by the provider.
i.e. if BT and Claranet both offer 2 meg links but the BT links is shared by 10 people and the Claranet link shared by 2 then do the people on BT get 200K a piece while the people on Claranet get 1Meg apiece or does eveybody get 166K each)?

Contentions is set by the provider normally. 2 users on a 2mb line doesn't mean 1mb each but simply 2 users sharing the same bandwidth, this isn't equally divided. Sometimes you'll see the full 2mb sometimes a lot less than 1mb it depends on how the traffic is shaped at the time of demand.

Yes but whoever has started sharing my connection must be constantly downloading stuff at the moment as whenever I speed check at the moment it is about half the usual rate I used to get with occasional periods when it goes back to that original speed. I just don't want to change provider and find that I still have to share my bandwidth whenever they decide to do a download.

Unless you live in a high population area its unlikly that your provider has their own equipment in your local exchange. More likely they are renting space on some one elses kit. So changing suppliers will not stop the problem as the physical bits will still be shared.
