Apple

The (Intel-engined) MacBook Pro has, if internet gossip has it right, a few problems
- it gets kinda hot (causing the fans to run)
- the fans are noisy - and so is the inverter that powers the screen backlight
- and some of the early batteries are failing

See here, for example
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/05/03/macbook_pro_noise_day_of_action/

Now, one reason the thing gets hot is that Apple *deliberately* put great gobs of compound between the chips and their heat sinks.
By removing the heat sinks, and the thermal compound, and correctly re-applying a mere trace of the stuff, the thing runs cool enough to put on your lap.
Apple ought to do this under warranty.
But their service instruction is to put great gobs of the stuff on.
So they don't recognise, let alone fix, the problem.

IMHO this deserves the widest possible publicity in light of the following.

Some guy posted the full details, including temperature measurements before and after cleaning up the gunk.
And Apple are now threatening to sue the webmaster of the forum he posted on... Rolling Eyes so lets publicise this!

Re: Infringement of Apple's Intellectual Property Rights webmaster@somethingawful.com

Dear WebMaster:

Apple Computer, Inc. ("Apple") recently noticed that Apple's copyrighted material is available for download at your website http://somethingawful.com. Specifically, there is a link to Apple's Service Source manual for the MacBook Pro in the discussion thread at http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...readid=1864582.

The Service Source manual for the MacBook Pro is Apple's intellectual property and is protected by U.S. copyright law. Linking to the manual on your website is an infringement of Apple's copyrights. We therefore must insist that you immediately take all necessary steps to remove the Service Source manual and any other Apple copyrighted material from your site and to prevent further unauthorized use or distribution of Apple intellectual property.

Apple reserves its right to contact your Internet Service Provider in the event you do not comply with these demands.

The foregoing is not intended to be a complete statement of the facts, and shall not constitute a waiver of any of Apple’s rights or remedies, all of which are expressly reserved.

We would appreciate a reply by email to copyrightagent@apple.com that you have complied, and we anticipate and appreciate your immediate cooperation.

Sincerely,

Sue Carroll
Apple Legal

Yep, his problem is that he admins a forum containing a link to Apple's Service Manual.

Wow! (But its not the first time Apple Legal have been so heavy handed.)

I think a little publicity can't hurt, can it?
Do you think the *outside* of a laptop *should* be 45-60 C? Ouch!
Is that why Apple pointedly don't call it a "laptop"?

(It comes down to about 30C with the heat sink compound properly applied - less *is* better. And the processor internal temperature also falls.)
mrutty

Now clearly it's not often that I agree with you it has to be said, but yes sadly the Apple legal team come out of the woodwork once again. And they wonder why the corperate markeplace won't have them. Even Microsoft publish their fixes and encouage the spreading of the 'fix the problem' message. I fear this will knock Apple back again in the corperate space.
