Apricots in tubs

A few years back we took pity on a miniature apricot as it was being sold off cheaply and needed a good home. We potted it up in a large terracotta pot with a soil based compost.

We've had a few problems with it but most are sorted. We managed to stop peach leaf curl last year by removing some of the soil and applying a fresh top dressing before the leaf burst in the spring.

However, we've not managed to get it to fruit. Each year it is covered in flowers, we use a fine paint brush to try and pollinate. Unfortunately only one or two set and they tend to fall off quite early.

What are we doing wrong? I'm sure the label said the apricot is self fertile but is it a simple case of getting the plant a partner? If we do get the fruit to set why do they fall off?

Any tips?

If the fruit are falling off I'd say it's inadequate watering, it's critical to keep it well watered after the fruit has set right up to when they start ripening.
