are silkies good for eggs?

ive been told that silkies would be the best chickens for me to keep for eggs but everything i find on the internet says they are poor layers.Could anyone give me some advice?

Silkies are sweet little birds, and brilliant broodies, but rubbish layers. The eggs they do lay are very nice, but they are more keen on being broody than laying eggs on the whole.

What Judith said. Did they give reasons why they would be good for you? ie, Size, easily tamed, that sort of thing? There are lots of different breeds that might fit, if you have a 'chicken specification list' Smile.

I need something hardy not to jumpy as i have 5 cats

My Silkie hen lays for a few days, then nothing for a few weeks.

I only keep her because she was given to me.

Oh I have 3 cats and the chooks just ignore them - I have barnvelders, marans, cream legbar, aracanas and ex-batt's - None of them bothered by the moggies - Chickens are more than capable of standing up to a few cats

What Jo said. If anything, my cats run away from the chooks.

Ditto re the cats. Our barnvelder hens actively chase our three away and they leave in a very dignified 'well, I was just going over here ANYWAY' kind of fashion.
