Aronia melanocarpa- Black chokeberryThe world outside my office is full of bushes with wonderful, shiny black berries. I'm told that they are Aronia melanocarpa. I plan to take some home and cook them, just for fun.
Anyone ever used them?

I had some lovely big bunches on mine this year but something beat me to harvesting them.
I have to keep a closer watch next year.
They're supposed to make a nice preserve, similar to cranberry jelly but I have not tried them myself yet. It'll be interesting to hear what you make of them.

I want to try jelly as well as cordial. There must be hundreds of kilos just outside my window. Seems to be considered an ornamental plant only. Just picked 5 kg to take home. We had frost this morning, and I see that my weekend will be spent cooking.
Would love some comments and feedback of other people's experiences!

Fruit - cooked. A good flavour but very astringent[183]. The fruit should be fully ripe before being eaten and is best after a frost or two[K]. It makes a good jelly when sugar is added and is also dried and used for making pemmican[183]. The fruit is rich in pectin and can be added to fruits that are low in this substance when making jams etc[183]. Pectin is also said to protect the body against radiation[201]. The fruit is about 9mm in diameter[200] |
The bit about pectin protecting from radiation is bit surprising to say the least!

Excellent news. I'll start eating more pectin so I can go out without the tinfoil hat on.

Or just smear jam in your hair.

I often go out with jam in my hair, and occassionally peanut butter. But that's because I'm a mucky pup rather than for protection against radiation.
