Article sections

After some planned merges I thought it would be best to try and sort out all the headings in one go. After a couple of days someone will try and come up with a poll and we can have a vote on which ones people like best.

So we could start with:

1) Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

2) Eat, drink and be merry. Including cooking, home brewing and curing & smoking

3) Wild Food

4) Poultry and Livestock

5) Growing your own and land management

6) Sustainable Building, Energy & Transport

7) Downsizer Life (could also be called "Self reliance" or "Do Your Own") It includes IT, home education, starting out etc.

Does nyone think we need sub-categories?

For example

Eat, drink and be merry: Reviews and Opinions
jema

it's tough if people do want sub-categories! Mambo will be supporting this in future versions, but does not do so now!

Is seven headings workable?

We have 13 at the moment. I think we would be crazy not to ditch 3 and preferably need to ditch more than this to get the cosmetics of the site workable. From this point of view I'd seriously want no more than 8 headings.

It has to be a balance between looks and logic. At the moment I think we are weak on both counts!
tahir

8 sounds about right to me
Mrs Fiddlesticks

i still quite like the 'does it matter' one - whether thats the right title for serious debate area I don't know, but we need somewhere that is available for that sort of ethical discussion that wouldn't fit anywhere else.

Don't like the idea of sub-catergories, the titles should be succinct enough to do the job.
jema

Ah, I think you are thinking about the forums. This is not about the forum, it is about sorting the main site sections and categories.

Please don't think you can rely on me for this... Laughing Laughing Laughing

1/ The Main Menu question.
On the Home page, in the bottom left hand corner, there lurks a "Main Menu".
IMHO, the "6 Leaves" should render this entirely unnecessary.
However, there are things that cannot be accessed via the 6 Leaves.
Specifically, these are the *Articles* under "News and Comment", the "Web Links" database (which seems broken or empty at the moment), and the "Gallery", and the Tell a Friend email form..
If these things can be found new homes within the 6 Leaves, then firstly the poor little Main Menu can be abolished, AND those things would be much more accessible.
I think it would be rational to put the "Comment" articles under whatever Article heading suits best - eg the "Meat" book review with cooking articles.
Any "News about Downsizer" surely logically belongs with the "About Us" Leaf. IMHO the Tell-a-Friend might go there too. (Is it used much?)
And the Gallery, if its to be piccies of Downsizers downsizing, deserves to be "About Us" too.
IMHO Glossary could easily become "Glossary and Links".

I feel that this should be done as a priority ahead of, or at least together with any article-category reorganisation - because the new categories would have to encompass the "Comment" articles too.

2/ Sub-categories
Given that there's a technical bar to this at the moment, it must be borne in mind when bringing categories together that there is a risk of making some categories very big in relation to others.
For example a "Make your own" category would be oversized...!
Ideally, the categories should be balanced for size, so that sub-categorisation could be postponed as long as possible.

3/ The Categories and their Names
Currently, there's no natural home for "Crafts" (other than food ones) - currently that would be classed in "Starting Out".
I like the idea of grouping the "doing it for yourself" stuff together. Starting Out, Home Ed, IT, *and* anything about Charities, Volunteering, etc from "News and Comment". I still think something like "Doing your own" is the right sort of title - potentially covering *any* misc craft or skill, as well as community action, etc.
Merging Cooking, Brewing and Curing/Smoking seems like a reasonable move - although this and Wild Food look like being the drivers for sub-categorisation! I'd offer the overall title "Foodcraft" which I dislike slightly less than Eat, Drink and be Merry!

4/ Category Ordering
It would be possible to create a bit more order by the "flow" of the categories, an example:
Wild Food
The Land and Growing your own
Poultry and Livestock
Foodcraft
Doing your own...
Sustainable Building, Energy and Transport
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Has a "flow" from foraging, through cultivation, animal keeping, into food, civilisation and recycling. I'm sure other "flows" would be possible... but having some clear logic to the order is worthwhile and costs nothing.

5/ Category Number
Seven is an *odd* number, and thereby works against *ever* presenting the list in two columns!
I wonder if there's any sense in making an eighth category, for the more philosophical stuff, about lifestyle, emigrating, volunteering...
But I certainly don't know what it might be called.
"Philosophies" seems a bit high falutin'...

I don't like that. I would generally think that hobebrewing and curing/smoking should be in a seperate section to cooking; there's a divide between preserving (including brewing) and cooking, I think.

Quote:

3) Wild Food

4) Poultry and Livestock

Pondering this one... Why Poultry AND livestock? Don't poultry count? That said, I like the mention of poultry in there, the chicken articles are popular.

Edit: Wild food could fit in with the cooking section, but in content it's very different to that.

Quote:

5) Growing your own and land management

Not bad, but we have to check to make sure the articles all fit.

Quote:

6) Sustainable Building, Energy & Transport

7) Downsizer Life (could also be called "Self reliance" or "Do Your Own") It includes IT, home education, starting out etc.

A better title including crafts in it is needed I think.

Seven seems like an unusual number to me too. I'd favour 8, the eigth being either seperate food and preserving/brewing sections or a craft one distinct from self reliance.
Treacodactyl

I deliberately left it at seven so we could add another (honestly). Having a separate food and preserving/brewing seems favourite and would balance the number of existing articles quite well.

Ordering does need to be looked at once the list is agreed and the names do need a little work.

"Why Poultry AND livestock? Don't poultry count? That said, I like the mention of poultry in there, the chicken articles are popular." I've often thought the same but people seem to like it like that and it does seem to work.

One comment I have is where do conservation and nature articles go? At the moment "Principles of Designing Gardens for Wildlife" is in Sustainable Building/Energy Efficiency but this can go in "Growing your own and land management "
jema

Have we got any conclusions yet?

I was hoping last week that with a few clear cut yes/no decisions I would have been given the mandate to get us on the road to reorganising things, but that seemed to get derailed into a lets rearrange it all at once session Sad

Since the old article addresses will work regardless, I would still prefer to see some movement in the right direction, rather than things being stuck in committee.

I reckon that if we did make a few of the moves that were generally agreed on, we would get further in being able to decide the rest quickly.
tahir

I'd be happy with TD's list (in some shape or form) with the addition of a catch all category for reviews, rants and raves.
Bugs

I've been thinking (it's OK, I'm sitting down and I have hot coffee on hand) and I like Dougal's suggestion that reviews etc should go under their appropriate category, as for example I might like cooking so I might read about Jema's samosas and think oooh I'd like an Indian cookery book, gosh, look, there's that chaps opinion on the latest Madhur Jaffrey and so forth.

So - given the forthcoming supermarkety thing - perhaps the suggestion of a final "concepts" or opinion etc category would be good.
jema

I didn't want to get embroiled here. But here goes, I am against the idea of reviews going in their related sections.

This is for the very simple reason that there is a Mambo "related items" module. I have been considering this one for awhile, and had been having a lot of concerns about server load with it. But with our own server and the mambo caching system and a bit of work, I think it would enable us to have a list of items thumbnail besides and linked within artcles taking people where they should go next Smile

So would they still have their own section? If so then that's the 8th and all we need to do is amend the names of the list I put up.

Anyone wish to have a go at them?

My glance at the link to the x-ref docs indicated that it is an *entirely* manual cross-ref system.
It works on special *tags* entered into the article.
All that this module seems to do is to display stuff about the tagged article.

Each and every cross reference tag must be inserted by hand.

Enter a new article, and *someone* must find every old article that the new one refers to.
AND add the new one to every old article that should link to the new one.

The work increases exponentially as the number of articles increases.

Nice facility, undoubtedly. But lots of work, and ever more in future.

AND its something that could be useful WHETHER OR NOT reviews are folded into their article sections.
Summarising that lot: nice, an expanding commitment, shouldn't need to impact categorisation.

I may be going "back an extra step", but I remain convinced that *all* articles (whether review, rant, practical tutorial or theoretical educational) really should be grouped *together* under "Articles".
As to whether "Opinions & Rants" should be a distinct category of article, IMHO, that's of lesser import. (But I'd still put 'em in their category - if there is a relevant one - but an "other stuff" category would round things out to the eight...)
jema

I think the cross reference is a little less manual than you suggest. But I really need to take it for a test drive to be sure.

documentation author wrote:
Point of this project is how to make good relation between ContentItem (e.g article) and other part of you Mambo site components, files, evenets ... and other ContentItems. Independently how are you using this bot/module, there is always known on one side list of words (metakeys of ContentItem or just wor you want to search) and all other things in your Mambo site on the other side. There are now two ways how to connect this two things togther:

3.1 Using metakeys (default)
When using metakeys, its search only in other metakeys (and/or title) of all other Content Items. For other MiniBots than ContentItem is obviously searched in short text fields like descriptions or/and titles. When this ANY field contain ANY of this metawords, these two are consider as 'related'. So this relation is binary - it exists or not and it depend on (and ONLY on) how good you wrote your metakeys. For comparsion it is used LIKE '%metaword%' operator.
3.2 Using fulltext
This is now experimentaly implemented only for ContentItem MiniBot. Fulltext search is more sofisticated - its using word-index for long text fields so it is possible to search in it and it this doesn't take so much time.

It *all* depends on how well you choose the keywords.
And review them in the light of other articles.

I was misled by the summary:
"This bot/module search for related items of actually showed item in others part of your Mambo site e.g. content items or weblinks. What means that two item has relation between each other see this part. You choose where - at the end of content item, inside text or both. Inside text use {mos_ri} or {mos_ri:[ID]} tags."

Perhaps you might ask Amiphist to rewrite the documentation! Very Happy Laughing Wink

(And I know that both my czech and slovak are entirely non-existant. The effort is praiseworthy, but its hardly clear.)
jema

So does anyone want to post a definitive guide to the changes that need making?
Treacodactyl

Well this is my stab at the titles and ordering. May I suggest if anyone disagrees then copy the list and make your changes?

1) Growing Your Own I think this can include land management without having it in the title. Producing your own timber is still 'growing your own'

2) Wild Food

3) Poultry and Livestock

4) Cooking

5) Home Brewing & Preserving

6) Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

7) Sustainable Building, Energy & Transport - What about "Sustainable Living"?

8] The Crafty Downsizer (could also be called "Self reliance" or "Do Your Own") It includes IT, home education, starting out, crafts etc.

Personally I think Cooking and home brewing & preserving could go in the same section as there's no obvious split, for example a salsa could go in cooking but a pickle in preserving? Anyway, I'm happy with that and I think it gives a reasonable spread. If we don't get this sorted soon jema may be force to hoover the server room and we all know what that means. Shocked
jema

I am getting really desperate to get this sorted, and unless someone kicks up sharpish, the list as TD has given will be done. I think sorting this was getting overdue two months back!
barefoot_boo

May as well chuck in my tuppence worth. Very Happy If it were up to me, I'd be inclined to take a 'less is more' approach and cut back to just 4 umbrella categories (with a view to creating the appropriate sub-categories when the functionality becomes available):

1) Downsizer Life - to encompass Starting Out, Reduce, Reuse & Recycle, Energy Efficiency, Crafts, Home Education, IT, general tips and tricks

2) Green Fingers - to encompass Growing Your Own, Land Management and Landscaping (all plant stuff!).

3) Feathers, Fish and Fur - to encompass Poultry, Livestock, Bee-Keeping, Fishing etc (non-plant living things!)

4) Culinary Creations
- to encompass Wild Food, Cookery, Curing & Smoking, Home Brewing (basically anything you stick in your mouth!)
Treacodactyl

Good titles boo, but I think we have agreed on having 8 sections to balance the front page (I think that's all we've agreed on Embarassed ).

What do you think of the list I put up? What does anyone else think?

Going once.....
tahir

My feeling is that the reviews should be one of the main Articles categories, where that leaves your list I dunno cos I'm going home now, seeya.

Merge the cooking and preserving into 'Kitchen Crafts'???

Agree with that, and JBs suggestion of "Kitchen Crafts"
Treacodactyl

1) Growing Your Own

2) Wild Food

3) Poultry and Livestock

4) Kitchen Carfts *or* Culinary Creations

5) Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

6) Sustainable Building, Energy & Transport *or* Sustainable Living

7) The Crafty Downsizer (could also be called "Self reliance" or "Do Your Own") It includes IT, home education, starting out, crafts etc.

8] Reviews

I've changed the titles to what I think works best, bit worried that 5,6 and 7 are too close, they need to be titled differently to make sense.
dougal

Sorry to bang the same drum, but the first thing is to find a new home for the stuff on the "Main Menu" under "News and Comment".

What are they? (Aah, so you haven't seen them?)
The Herring Article (to Wild Food, like the Mackerel one, or Kitchen Crafts? or where?)
Article on food wastage (to Sustainable Living? or where?)
Moorland Mousie Trust - pony charity (to Poultry, Livestock & other animals?) or Do your own {charitable bit}? )
And *5* book reviews...
Biodiesel review (IMHO to Sustainable Living)
and 4 food books (easy, to a combined food section - only tricky thing would be deciding if "Meat" went into the current cooking or preserving section.)

Given that I'd like to see the "Main Menu" stripped back, the problem, IMHO, is not so much the importance of keeping Reviews separate, but of whether there needs to be an "Opinions" category (for food wastage, charity pieces, personal rants, etc) and then whether Book Reviews deserve to be in with opinions (to balance the numbers in each category) or in their logical place, depending on their subject matter.
dougal

So here's my list

1) Wild Food

2) Growing Your Own

3) Poultry and Livestock ("Keeping your own..." ??)

4) Cooking, Baking, Brewing & Preserving

5) Doing your own (includes IT, home education, starting out, crafts etc.)

6) Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

7) Sustainables & Renewables (Energy, Transport, Building)

8] Opinions (& Rants)

with reviews wherever they are most appropriate.

And I'll try and make that my last word on the subject! (I'll try, really!)
tahir

dougal wrote:

I thought we'd sorted that, they're all going to go in Rants & Reviews (aren't they?)

I still can't see the point in putting the review of the preserving book anywhere other than with the preserving articles...
But I would start the article title (for all reviews) with the word "Review:"

However, more particularly as Jema says reclassification doesn't break links, ANDthat a cross-reference scheme is in the offing, it doesn't matter nearly as much what category or where an individual piece goes, just so long as "News & Comment is cleared out and can be abolished.

Then the task becomes rationalising Events, Links, Glossary, Gallery (and maybe About Us - which *ought* to at least contain "tell a friend")

There, I'm done.
tahir

Wild Food

Grow Your Own

Poultry and Livestock

Cooking, Brewing & Preserving

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

Sustainables & Renewables

Rants, Raves & Reviewsor if reviews are wherever they are most appropriate "Rants & Raves".

Everything Else
Jonnyboy

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle is awfully similar to Sustainable & Renewable.

I would rather merge that than anything.

Right, I've locked myself in a room, put my head in a noose and I've got about an hour before the block of ice melts.

To keep the titles the right length we don't need salting or smoking as they are methods of preserving. We also don't need the word rant as that's an opinion. So how about:

1) Wild Food

2) Growing Your Own

3) Poultry and Livestock

4) Brewing & Preserving

5) Gourmet Downsizer (I prefer Culinary Creations)

6) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
