AVG free virus software

Those of you who run the AVG free virus checker V7.1 will have been prompted that is is to be replaced by V7.5. It can be downloaded from: http://free.grisoft.com

I also notice that AVG do a free anti-spyware program on the same site. Anyone tried them?
shopgirlsue

Yep I downloaded it a few months ago after seeing a recommendation in the Guardian. It seems fine to me.
The only problem is that the free version doesn't automatically look for updates or do scans - it does them automatically for a trial period and then you either pay or have to remember to do them yourself - and this thread has reminded me that I need to do one Very Happy Very Happy

Somebody PMd me about another free AV programme, AVAST I think it's aclled, that's supposed to be good too.
Arjan

There are several free AV programs available. In most tests they are rated in this order

1. Avira (www.free-av.com)
2. Avast (www.avast.com)
3. AVG (free.grisoft.com)

AVG seems to be quite popular but is actually not doing a very good job.
See for instance http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav.htm

I'm using the AVG Anti-Spyware as well, and it seems to find more threats (mainly tracking cookies) than Ad-Aware.

Avast over Grisoft any day. Had both for a while on old computer. Avast pick up about 7times more nasties.

Was Grisoft really missing them or was Avast just blocking valid traffic?

Always a tough one this area. Something like Sophos will send out specific IDs for each virus where as something like Norton blanket blocks whole groups of traffic. It's OK to use the Norton method if you can afford to lose the messages but a real pain in the arse if you wanted you virus free message.

(Long term members will know of my hatred for Norton and so it is not a recommend product from mrutty)

It is indeed true that the products that are best known (= biggest marketing departments) like Norton/Symantec and McAfee are only of mediocre quality. They never end up on the top of the lists in the AV comparisons.
