B & B in York.Does anybody know about a reasonably good B & B in York that isn't priced to high heavens? It should preferably lie either close to York St John University, or close to some sort of public transport that stops close to the
Uni.
Thanks.

Ooh. Are you coming to visit? When?

Beginning of September, only two weeks from now. Both me and OH are presenting papers at a conference, and we need a place to stay from 1. (or possibly 31.) to the 3. (or possibly 4.).

Hi
Perhaps not the cheapest, but my OH flags up this place. http://www.23stmarys.co.uk/ (or at least he thought it was this one when i googled it... !) It's apparently quite chintzy..as the photos probably illustrate!
Its about a 5-10 min walk from St Johns, down Bootham & Gillygate and on on the same street as the Minster inn - (where a few DS types supped beer a few months ago)
My OH is also doing a paper at a conference at St Johns the first weekend of Sept... its not an archaeology conference is it?!!
By the way St Johns got its university status very recently... local folk don't refer to it as a university - so don't get directed to York university which is located a few miles away from the centre in Heslington, so don't get mixed up!
I'll have a think and let you know if i come up with anything else

Thank you, I will take a look at this. No, it's not archeology, but the History of Religion.

What about the Premier Inn ?
http://www.premierinn.com/pti/home.do
I use them if I travel anywhere - they are basic but clean, and as you pay for the room, for 2 people they are good value.
Book soon, as they go fast.....
and congrats on presenting the papers - exciting stuff !

The youth hostel always used to be good in York - they may be worth a look

I stayed here recently http://www.queen-annes-guesthouse.co.uk/ and it was pretty good - wallpaper somewhat dubious, but the staff were very friendly and helpful, they left us a map with everywhere we needed to go marked on it. By far the cheapest place we could find.

Well, it would not be expencive here, but when you go to foreign places were people speak in a heathen lingo, you sort of expect cheap accommodation and cheap beer, don't you.
Have booked on Queen Anne's Guesthouse, by the way. £28 per night for each of us in a double en-suite bedroom with breakfast included. Looks like a lovely place.
Again, thank you all for your help.

Nah; it's been one for years. My friend went to Ripon and York St John's 14 years ago. It was a university then.
As for finding it, 'tis easy - head for the cathedral and it's on the other side of the wall (behind the Bishop's Palace), just up the road from the Bile Beans sign.

lastminute.com is quite good. Have had some bargains. Good B&B's used to be inexpensive if you looked hard but not anymore.

My Mum had a nice B&B in Haxby, near York which is only a fifteen minute bus ride from the town centre. I think when she moved out the new owners turned it back into a residential property.
Not much help is it, sorry. There were some nice B&Bs on Gillygate as I recall.

Haven't been to York since the early 80's, but I'm still haunted with thoughts of the number of obscure Northern Soul 45's I may have missed in the junk shop next to the B&B.

well i did say "perhaps not the cheapest"
| Quote: | | Nah; it's been one for years. My friend went to Ripon and York St John's 14 years ago. It was a university then. |
True that it's been a college of higher education for decades (dropping Ripon a few years ago) but strictly speaking it was a college of the University of Leeds hence its degrees were from Leeds and not a University in its own right. for about the last year it has been a university in its own right and hence able to use "university" in its title and award its own degrees. Referring to it as simply "the university" rather than "st Johns" round York could cause confusion in view of this relatively recent addition to its title and the other university in the city.

Hi Erikht,
I live in York, but unfortunately I’m very busy writing a dissertation at present morning, noon & night, I’m in the last few weeks & its all getting very stressful. so I’m like a bear with a saw head.
The area of town called Bootham is a good bet for accommodation. We’re getting married soon, and my partner has been around a lot of accommodation in Bootham to get a list together for people who are coming to our wedding. I’ve coppied it out below. When phoning, add (44) and take off the zero for phoning from outside UK.
York is an expensive place to stay. Hotels & guest houses can charge what they like and still fill their rooms. Its all the tourists.
The youth hostel is in a large old Victorian mansion. Its got a very good reputation, clean private rooms & lovely grounds. Its easily accessible by road, or a short walk up the river side path from the railway station. Its also a fraction of the cost of the B&B’s
My advice: get a plane to either Leeds (Bradford) or Manchester airport, get a connecting bus from Leeds airport to York railway station, or a connecting train from Manchester airport (both of these are every half hour or hour throughout the day), walk from the station to either Bootham or the youth Hostel
All these places are within 5 minutes walk of the centre. where exactly is your seminar? Bootham is on the other side of the town centre from York university, but they often hold their seminars in the centre of town. If you’re out at the University campus, you’d be best off going by taxi, if your seminar is at one of their city centre buildings, you’ll be a few minutes walk away.

Thank you, James.
I have already booked at Queen Anne's. It was only £28 for each of us per night, breakfast included, for an en-suite double bedroom. Also, it doesn't look like a long walk from St. John's, where the conference will be situated.
I am already looking forward to come down South to you people. I have not been in York before, only down in Edinburgh and a very short trip down South to Aberdeen.

I went before it was opened, when it was just a portacabin on an archaeological dig site. I remember that being pretty cool. It was a field trip for my O Level Latin for some reason.

I have never heard about the bar. "Gate" is street in Norwegian, though.
