and just like there perents thay have no fear of being handled

Treacodactyl

I'll resist the temptation to say they look cute! How old will they be when they are ready to work and do they need any training or is it all instinct?

there dead cute. used to have a few ferrets, funny little creatures. Had a bad experince with one though, I was just sitting while they were out playing and it bit me on the wrist, but then didn't let go! my Oh had to come and open its jaws to get it off Sad
pricey

Thanks Sparky, I take it that the one on It's own is the Hob that you have so kindly promised Carl.

For those of you that were here for the weekend in Jan, my mate Carl had that big hob, well sadly he died about three weeks ago.

So I asked BunnyKiller if he knew of any and it just so happened that Sparky has so all is well.

When will he be ready mate?

Ah,well handled ferrets.......worth their weight in gold Laughing

The youngsters....

i love ferrets! hehe, although I don't hunt with them coz personally I dont think I could kill a rabbit, and I wouldn't want my babies to have hurt whilst down a hole with a kickin' bunny.
all those ferrets are very sweet. I think people misunderstand them, they aren't cage animals in my opinion and they are quite smart and needs lots of stimulation. I guess chasing a rabbit is pretty stimulating though : )
On many occassions I am against people hunting with ferrets only because of the way the ferrets are kept, and because it is done as a sport; with no purpose. I think i would go hunting only to give the ferrets the rabbit!
here are my two:
(Gwion is the sliver, and Mikko is the albino)

my niece having a cuddle with mikko, he is very snuggly lol

IMO - A ferret is a hunting animal and should be treated as such ie.Well!
They are fed whole carcase animals and the 3 I have atm have a hutch and run of 24cu ft or larger. They are handled and played with daily.
I hunt them throughout the winter months and occaisionally into the spring if there is a specific problem. The rabbits are used by myself, neighbours, friends, dogs and ferrets.

You should give your ferrets a try in a few netted burrows and see how ruthless they are,as nature has provided them with senses and a natural ability that makes us look pathetic.

Nice Futrets as they say here abouts thumbleft

I suppose many animals (as companion animals) are hunting animals, but are not kept as such.
I think its great that you handle you ferts daily and give them the meat, if they have a good life then thats fair enough.
Sometimes I think i should go hunting, because I can't stand to buy chicken, i hate that; because I can never be assured that the chicken was killed quickly in a humane way. If i were to hunt at least I could guarantee the animal would have a quick death.
Its deffinitley one to think about when keeping a meat eating animal. As a vegetarian I don't mind giving the ferts meat, but I do care about where I get it from. Ooh the dilema. I am okay for a bit though because I still ahve some old chickens in the freezer from our chooks, and i knew they had a super life with a quick death.

I have some cute ferret kit piccies to share too.

These belonged to my baby sister.

There were 13 kits in this litter.

I say
" I've kept ferrets all my life because ferreting is a very practical and productive way of catching rabbits for myself and friends to eat"

My ferrets are also very cute and friendly, they get lots of cuddling but also get to carry out the task that they were originally bred to do ! Very Happy

Hand tame is as far as ever felt the need to go ! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Having read my previous post, it may have seemed I was having a pop at the ladies and their beautiful ferrets.
What I really meant to say was that as long as the creatures are kept well it shouldn't matter whether they are kept in pet homes or working homes.
Being kept as a pet doesn't guarentee a ferret a good home anymore than or less than being kept in a hunting home.
Azura Skye

I think if you look after them well, like you say Bodger, it doesn't matter if they are a house pet or hunting pet, or whatever.
But the only way I have seen ferrets kept around these parts is locked in a tiny rabbit hutch with wood shavings. And when I take mine for a walk, I get to odd chav coming up to me (can of carling in hand usually) saying 'oy mate, got a ferret i can 'ave?'
which annoys me no end. It's the same mentality that people who want to have snakes and tarantulas have - lets have the animals, not for their sakes, but to make us look 'tough'.
But I am well aware, that anyone on a downsizing forum, who take pictures of their ferts must respect them lots : ) yay!
Bodger

The trouble is AS, as you and I know, ferrets are too cheap and easily available .
Not that money counts but if you think that idiots mistreat dogs that cost hundreds of pounds then the poor humble ferret hasn't got a chance !
Azura Skye

indeed Mr.bodger, either £5 or for free! It's terrible when any animal's life is offered for free imo.
Hellrider

I have a pair of these cute little cleaver intelligent creatures, and they are a bit older then 1 yea.... somthing like a year and a half.
this is her second litter. the first she had 8 and now 10. 4 coloured and the rest albino. still are with closed eyes and they are nearly a month old.
The worst one i had now was not long ago. I was cleaning her cage when suddenly she bit me in the ear and hanged there like a piercing....Ouch!!!!
(do they do it to you aswell?)
kirstyfern

We got our boy from ferret rescue and paid £40 for him! We love him to bits. Been too scared to put him down a rabbit hole as don't want to lose him.
The dog is fine with him and vice versa, he tried to eat the goat kids though! (the ferret, not the dog)
