baby chrochet/knitting- head sizes?Hi all,
a friend has just had a baby (2 weeks ago) and I am busy making little baby shoes. (I'll post a picture soonish)
I thought I would crochet a hat to go with them but am not so sure about head sizes. Other patterns say 12- 13" circumference but that seems really small as the hat doesn't stretch -( i'm using a bamboo yarn which is more like cotton rather than wool).
Now I'm begining to wonder if maybe this is not such a good idea with summer coming soon...would a baby wear a crochet hat in summer?
Should I unravel and stick to shoes?
At the moment the circumference is 16" (which look head size to me but I don't have a baby to measure!)
The shoes seem a little big too- at 4" long but i thought he'd grow into them and it seemed to match the size of mothercare shoes I snuck a look at the other day!
any help much appreciated.

hat looks really small next to the shoes- it's only half finished, needs ear flaps and blue brim and a few more rows yet- just thought I'd show what kind of size it is right now...

They look gorgeous natty. I've no idea about babies' head sizes, but I guess he'll grow into the hat if it's a bit big.

They're fantastic looking shoes. I love the cross-over buttoned straps. I'd be so chuffed if someone gave me those for my baby!
4" for the shoes sounds good...maybe after a few months at least.
As for babies heads, our 6 month old has a biggish head, easily 16". A lot of that has happend since 4 months. However, a friend has a girl who's 7.5 months and has a tiny head- much less than 16", maybe 14".
I'm amazed at how fast our child's head has grown. We bought a little sun hat four weeks ago. It fitted with a little room to spare, and now its to small.
So whatever size you decide on, make it a little larger than that...

ok so maybe 16 " will be fine and as you say he'll probably grow into it.
I love these shoes they came out so great, I'm really pleased with them. part of me is starting to get a little broody too now I've made them!
in case anyone wants the pattern for the shoes...
