Bad Beans

My beans, runners and climbing french are really dismal. Is it just me or are everyone elses struggling. I have 4 wigwams of each and in mid August, should be picking runners by the bucketful.

Last night I managed half a colander full from all eight wigwams.

Dire. Tims says its lack of water Rolling Eyes Raining again today.

He must be living in that other Wales.

Only done climbing French this year, of 10 varieties some are going mental (maybe 2kg in the freezer last night) and others are doing bugger all.

Gareth's mum's beans are also being sluggish, plenty of healthy plant, beans are there but taking their time to fatten up and become worth cooking

Our outdoor runners aren't cropping very heavily yet but considering the wet days the bees haven't been flying enough to pollinate well.
Our indoor runners are almost finished & have done well.

Runners are definitely more like dawdlers this year, but I've had a few servings and there are lots of small pods on the plants now. I saw a bee busy on the flowers yesterday evening. The plants are growing strongly now, but there seems to be a lot more leaf than flowers. Still, with a bit of luck they'll go on until October and I only eat them fresh, so I don't need a huge crop.

Climbing french beans are doing quite well, runners are just starting but dwarf french beans are awful.

Got enough of both runner and French, but definitely less than most years. Basically its a lack of sunny days.

Ditto here. My runners are fattening but not getting to their usual length. The climbing Frenchies are doing very well considering the weather we've been having.

The dwarf French are .............. well, dwarf! They are curling and mottled. Taste OK but certainly don't look appetising. Since Sunday they have been under water Crying or Very sad

I now have a mental image of Dot standing over said bean plants, shaking her finger at them while saying "Bad beans".

It's going to take days to get rid of that.

Very Happy

They tower over me actually - they are certainly not stunted.

Also grown a white flowered variety which are supposed to set better in poor weather conditions HA HA HA. Rolling Eyes

I think it's more to do with a surfeit of slugs Sad

And I thought it was just me - mine have been dire, they were great last year which was a pretty miserable summer too.

I did feed them a couple of times with tomorite - was that a bad idea? Embarassed

Dire beans here too. My MIL's were great in Anglesey though, cropping loads daily Rolling Eyes

Runners are doing really well, picked up a Spong bean slicer from Church Stretton to help cope with the numbers.

Only bean of that kind I'm growing is climbing French.
Four wigwams, but something has been nipping through the stems, so not much will come of them. Wet weather has not helped.

Next year I will grow them in positions where their stems can be protected, with netting or with tree guards. And grow them on for longer in bigger pots with canes before planting out.

I've been very pleased with my beans (both french and runner) this year - but I always seem to struggle getting decent crops of broad beans.
tiggy

lots of plant but very few flowers on my runners, none set and some were vandalised by the sparrows.no beans yet. Next door have loads of flowers and beans, over the road more flowers and beans and plenty on the allotments. What am I doing wrong? Has anybody grown Red Rum? I looked at them in a seed catalog and it says they are good setters
