Badger!Last night after 10 pm, after the mention on the local weather forecast of Saturn being sighted in the SW, I went along the track with one of the terriers, the other one, being elderly and deaf, stayed at home.
No Saturn, probably too early.
However Pixie was a bit agitated about something, the track is on the edge of a banky field, with long grass, bluebells and cow parsley, and no fence. I thought it was one of the cats - until I saw the striped face! A large, surprised badger! It took off like a rocket with Pixie in hot pursuit - I'd no idea they could shift that fast - but luckily she did turn and come back, I think she was a bit scared! It was BIG!
I have lived here for nearly 22 years, and knew there were badger setts about a mile away, but there hasn't been any visible signs here. I take the dogs out at all hours, too.
That was only the second live badger I had ever seen. It sounds a bit fanciful, but the sight of a big striped face surrounded by bluebells and cow parsley, in the half light, was breathtaking!! It was about 4 yards away!!

Wonderful! I've only seen live badgers once - caught by surprise on a downland track at dusk - very thrilling .
Edited to say: Doh! That wasn't the only time - I've also seen them in a holiday cottage garden, but that wasn't so exciting as they used to come for food and were expected.

Badgers are brilliant! I've seen a few around here, there seem to be loads in the area. Apparently there are even more where we are moving to.

A few years back as I was walking back from the pub and approaching my house I saw what I thought was a cat in the road . As I got closer I realised it was a badger we stood and stared at each other for a few moments. He got bored before me and ambled off.
I live on an estate on the edge of town and see them fairly frequently. Also got a couple of bats that circle my garden most nights and hedgehogs and squirrels have been seen as well.
