Beachcombing - is this amethyst?Just back from the beach and found these....I am pretty sure it is amethyst but maybe someone in DS land can enlighten me further.
Usually comeback with polished glass and driftwood but today this was in abundance....
Does anyone else go beachcombing and have you found interesting things on the beach?

Scratch the unglazed back of a tile with it - if the streak is coloured, then the stuff is glass, but if it's white it's likely to be amethyst.

Next question. If it is, how much is that little lot likely to be worth ?

Only jasper and banded agate
But plenty of other weird or useful stuff : old fishing nets and fish boxes, plastic floats
Around the time human body parts were being washed up on the Galloway coast [but not the legs], I found a plastic doll's leg. This doesn't sound very funny, but it made me laugh at the time, in a sick sort of way.
Dead seals.
This is at a place called Stinking Bight on the Mull of Galloway. Must be where everything gets washed up after the spring tides.

very little, unless its gem quality amythest has a very low value in eth rough. But definately do the streak test as suggested, if you don't normally get that rock on a beach you know well it could be something else that has washed up from another source

Yep.....definately amethyst. Not bothered about polishing it as it is beautiful in its raw state. Going to go back and find more at some stage.
It has whet my appetite to find out more about minerals and semi-precious stones though....

Make it into jewelry or sell them as they are. Amethyst is very popular and a lovely stone, I wouldn't be without mine.

I love collecting small pieces of different-coloured glass with the sharp bits knocked off, very frequent on the West Wales coast! I keep them in a water-filled jar on the windowsill, fine until the water goes green in the sunshine!
Has anyone been to Aberdaron beach on the Lleyn peninsula? It was a real treat when I was a child, particularly in the winter. The variations of coloured stones have to be seen to be believed, not precious stones, just bits chipped off the world. There used to be a huge rock sticking out of the sand that looked exactly like a side of beef, excellent colour and perfectly marbled with fat!!
