bench from sleeper

Hi, thought people might be interested - made from half an ex-sleeper. Took about 8 hours (in the freezing cold). Tools: chain saw, chisel, sanding discs, polish. Cost of sleeper €18. 'Cos of the creosote preserve it's not meant to stay in the house - but it's so cute!

That is very nice. Make some more and schlep them round the country fairs for 100 euro.

That's lovely - seems a shame it is not for indoors - does it smell of creosote?

I had the same idea too twoscoops. The problem is that there isn't the same market for crafty things in France - unless someone can tell us different? And we haven't got the where-with-alls/energy/will to tour the UK.

Ta, Ian33568 - there's a slight smell of oil/creosote but we're seeing if it will dry out to odourlessness. It seems the issue with preserved sleepers is food/babies/prolonged skin contact. If the cat snuffs it we know to be careful.

Shame, I know a couple who live in the Pyrenees. He makes furniture and cheese boards and she does extrememly well selling them at country fairs and horse shows through the summer in the UK.

Extremely well!!!

I made my mantlepiece from an old (very old) railway sleeper, I took it to the local garage/car wash and gave it it a bloody good pressure wash first and it has been fine. I'll take a pic sometime for you.

Do be careful, though: a neighbour used sleepers to edge the patio. Looked really good and worked except that, in warm weather, they leaked tar and it got everywhere.

Shocked Shocked How did my cat get to your house????????

Love the bench !
Grimnir

That is some fantastic dovetailing! Don't think I've seen any that size before Smile
ksia

Ta for the warning mochyn - will keep an eye on it. I think I can just about remember warm weather.

Rosemary Judy - said cat has taken to attacking gloves (esp oven gloves) at random - does it still sound like yours?

Thanks Grimnir - I was going for the dovetail world record!

And a pic would be interesting Silas.

Despite my reservations, it is lovely though! I'd love one for the kitchen...

You can get sleepers that don't have creosote or tar on them. Some of the older ones were made from a wood called Jarrah, a type of eucaluptus that is impervious to bugs and weather. Hard as nails and getting difficult to find but still around

some here

Nice bench, I want one now. You can get Jarrah sleepers in Portugal, but mind it is very hard and very difficult to cut.
